Liberal Democrats gave us Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the ACA and SNAP (Food Stamps). We believe that Government can make life sustainable for the poor and middle class.
Therefore, closing government and thinking Republicans give a fuck is delusional. Never mind closing the government, they would like to eliminate it.
So, what I'm saying is, for us to use shutting government down will always be a losing tactical decision for Democrats.

(3,144 posts)Social Security,Medicare,Medicaid and Snap ever cave to republicans? Democrats today were handed all of those with the exception of the ACA from their predecessors and have been poor stewards of those programs by not willing to go to the ends of the earth to protect them as evident by caving on this shut down and getting absolutely nothing out of it.

We can do it again, but only by winning elections.

(3,144 posts)Earlier Democrats won those majorities, because people felt the full consequences of conservative policies which is what it will take again. By the time Trump is gone we will be lucky if any of those programs are left at all.

(67 posts)The point is that unless and until people feel actual consequences, people will not move on their political positions. The difference between keeping the government closed and opening it back up is the difference between a slow burn and ripping a bandaid off.
Democrats were not being blamed on the whole for the shutdown and we got absolutely zero concessions. This was not a crisis for Democrats to solve.

We have to win at least one branch of government and only voters can make us do that.

We have a President withholding funds to our States, we pay in more than we receive, so there will be a breaking point.

(948 posts)People need to understand the consequences. The need to feel the pain.
Besides, which party is actually in power? How fucked up is it, when a majority party can escape consequence over bad policy and hostage taking tactics?
Democrats should have forced the GOP to go nuclear. That was the only option. Im just seeing a bunch of cowards in government that know they wont pull the trigger, because well
politics.
