(7,290 posts)I spent a certain amount of my childhood living on military bases and going to school hanging out with kids from various persuasions, before experiencing the tail end of a once segregated society, the latter of which (I'd concluded quite early) was founded upon pure, unnecessary bullshit.
So, having experienced a bit of both, I'd concluded very early on that racism, (if not race) was a phony ass construct, whose primary purpose was to create the bullshit fallacy that some people were inherently something less, while simultaneously creating the equally bullshit fallacy that certain other people were inherently 'all that and a bag o' chips.
So, the tangible benefit they derive from hating on some 'other' is living under the delusion that they're BETTER.

(5,910 posts)Yes, there are still racists out there in this country, millions of them.
But the anti-immigrant attitude I see from the people around me is more about opposition to other cultures.
They oppose immigrants because they do not want to mingle with other cultures. They especially don't want to hear other languages being spoken around them. They don't want to see people dressed differently than they consider normal.
If immigrants were English speaking christians with brown skin, they'd be welcomed by most (though not all) Pubs. Especially if they loved football and beer.
