Some context to counter the doom and gloom and give some hope:
1. Snap funded through September at current levels.
2. RIF protection for federal workers through end of next year.
3. Binding vote on ACA subsidies that has a really good chance of winning.
4. If it doesn't win, then the Democrats can shutdown the government again in 2 months, which just repressurizes everything for Republicans.
If Republicans pass ACA subsidies then they get to hold another thing hostage in January. If the Republican's don't pass ACA subsidies, they can go right back to this same issue again.
This is the longest government shutdown in US history, the second longest during Trumps first term in 2018. Either this was going to continue with millions losing healthcare and food or a deal had to be made. Republicans are now beholden to their constituents and conditions, if they do not follow through this is on them again and a shutdown will happen. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., in angry remarks on the Senate floor, said he would not vote for the deal. I'm no fan of Schumer but direct the blame where it belongs...the White House, the Republicans cutting healthcare, and any Democrats who agree to this CR without extending the ACA subsidies. The agreement does call for a vote in December on a Democratic-picked bill to extend the subsidies.
BOTTOM RANT LINE:
It's not what we wanted, truly not what we thought would happen. So, now, we move forward.
The most dangerous people you can be spending time around at this point, are those who say, "I'll never quit fighting," but then, the moment something "bad" happens...instantly step into, "OMG. We're SOOOOO f*cked! It's all over."
These people are like poison to your mind and emotions.
I'LL SEE YOU ALL IN THE STREETS.

(2,240 posts)It is messy and ugly at times, but as you stated, "the fight does go on." When I get annoyed with the legislative process I try to remember what Mark Twain wrote about law making. "People who love sausage and respect the law should never watch either one being made."

I want fighters. I want winners.

(8,547 posts)As will millions of other Americans.
This vote has effectively killed the ACA which needs those millions to spread the risk.
Jan 30th is far FAR FAR too late. Hell, a vote sometime in December is too late to save us. The exchange closes on 12/15 for anyone needing coverage on Jan 1. Permanently closes for the entirety of 2026 on Jan 15th.
This is a sham.
I cant believe DUers are falling for this shit sandwich

(4,002 posts)a December vote on ACA subsidies? I am not even sure there is "any chance at all" a vote will take place.
For a lot of people, they are "SOOOO fucked!" And it may indeed be "all over" once their health care is terminated.

(23,349 posts)I have NEVER seen such outright rage from within the party, directed at the party, as I've seen from what happened last night.
Even when Biden was forced out there was some anger, some relief, but nothing even close to what I've seen.
The Democrats built a great deal of hope and momentum on Tuesday, people were energized, and the Dems in the senate that pushed this through just torpedoed that.
There is NO sugar coating what happened last night. None.
