Agree, the most the petition would do is force Republicans to go on record about releasing the Epstein files Jersey Devil Monday #2

Right. Nothing bad can come of this for Democrats. Unless one of the four Republicans Wiz Imp Monday #15

Grijalva will be sworn in once the house reconvenes to vote on the senate version of the CR.

Her signature on the discharge petition only forces the house to vote on a resolution demanding DOJ release the Epstein files, putting every rep on record as supporting or opposing the release.

The resolution would then go to the senate, where it would die. Even if it passed, Trump would veto or ignore it.

There was never a chance that the house could “force” the DOJ to release the Epstein files- that was a myth.

Even if enough Republicans, like MTG, vote for release in the House it will never see a vote in the Senate.

It's pretty damn close to zero, but under the right (unlikeliest) circumstances, it could happen. What is zero, however, is the chance of Trump signing it if it did pass.

That said, many Republicans in the House are terrified of being forced to go on the record with their vote on this. Believe me, they don't want to go on the record as voting to protect pedophiles. It would not surprise me if a large number of Republicans abstained from the vote when it comes up for a vote. They won't vote for the legislation, but they can avoid explicitly voting for it by abstaining.

and the heat will then be on Senate Republicans, which really might not be so bad for Dems, whether it passes the Senate or not, never even gets a vote or is ignored or vetoed.

who signed the petition changes their mind, it will come up for a vote. And Republicans, whether they vote no or abstain will look like they are hiding something. Likewise, if the Senate refuses to take it up, it will look like they are hiding something too. The vote in the House will be a huge first step towards using the issue to hang around the necks of ALL Republicans for the midterms. And there is nothing they can do to counter it.

They can vote "no" in any vote to release the files, but they cannot stop the petition as long as their signatures on on it when Grijalvas signs.

So theoretically, only 217 votes are needed to pass the bill since there are 2 vacant seats. So one of the 4 could vote against or abstain and it still will pass.

If none of the Repubs change their minds and vote with Dems to pass the resolution to release the files, there may be an avalanche of "yes" votes from other Republicans who don't really want the files released but are terrified of being labeled as pedophile protectors.

There's irrefutable judicial precedent. She will be sworn in 100% guaranteed.
