WASHINGTON (AP) Hormone-based drugs used to treat hot flashes and other menopause symptoms will no longer carry a bold warning label about stroke, heart attack, dementia and other serious risks, the Food and Drug Administration announced Monday.
What do we have here? A step forward or another in RFK Jr's series of medical malpractices? They (the FDA) were certainly touting the hell out of it at a press conference this morning.
Yet the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists approves:

(6,009 posts)If most medical groups approves, and, presumably the manufacturers of the stuff approve, why has the topic been so controversial?
Is it remotely possible that Jr. et al actually did something logical this time??

(112,088 posts)That said, if you read the European medical literature, the risks from hormone replacement for heart attack, dementia, and stroke in those women who would benefit from it were demonstrably low and the benefit high. Not zero risk, especially for blood clots in those women predisposed, but hopefully, the women who are at risk from coexisting conditions will still be counseled appropriately.
That said, for decades, hormone treatment was used in Europe to treat menstrual migraines in young girls and women who suffered horrifically from them, yet few providers (especially with male providers) would prescribe them in this country. This went on for decades, as I said, despite the overwhelming accumulating data underscoring its value.
So, while I do not advocate ZERO labeling of risk for this or any other prescription medication that warrants it, there is some middle ground. And yes, I still maintain RFK Jr. was more than willing to turn away from this issue, as it is not something he can readily exploit.

(10,604 posts)Have been on bio-identical estrogen and progesterone for many yrs. Its so common now, you can get bio identicals online with no prescription.
Bio identicals hormone are often from wild yams (sometimes soy)
Wild yams from Mexico contain a steroid that converts into progesterone and the different estrogens. You can get it in cream to rub on daily or patches.
I was getting it by prescription for yrs till I found the exact amt as my prescription online for cheaper.
Women gynecologists from NYU Langone Menapause program have been vocal on the use of biological hormones being heart protective for yrs.

(206 posts)Hormone Replacement Therapy these days is very different from what was used in the Women's Health Initiative time. Back in the past, estrogen was Premarin (Pregnant Mare Urine), which was close to natural estrogen, but not identical. Now a days, estrogen is a synthesized identical compound called Estradiol and is available in pill, patch, injection, cream and implant modalities.
When I started HRT, my PCP wanted a sign off from my Cardiologist, which he gave easily.
