All is not lost. One step backward to take two steps forword.

Cruelty is the point, but we are better, stronger, and smarter than that. Here are a few of my personal observations. (Kinda long. Sorry.)

He and his MAGA toadies didn’t give an inch while millions of Americans suffered, and they will continue to suffer.

Democrats didn’t get the continuation of the ACA subsidies, and millions of our healthcare premiums are going to go through the roof.

Granted, we do get a vote in the Senate to change that in December, but we all know how that’s going to turn out. The Senate will likely vote it down. And if the Senate passes it, little Mikey Johnson likely won’t bring it up anyway.

Ultimately, it would require Trump‘s sharpie (or autopen) to pass it, and that is likely a non-starter in itself.

Truth is, even if the Senate actually put the ACA subsidies in this package, the House would have voted it down, and Trump would’ve vetoed it anyway.

Luckily, there is a silver lining in all of this.

MAGA has proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that they don’t care at all about their constituents. It’s all about themselves. Nothing more.

They have proven that they will let their constituents starve, lose their jobs, go broke and lose their healthcare, instead of backing away from their steady march toward authoritarianism.

They have proven these things, and a vast majority of the public sees it clearly.

Last Tuesday’s elections also proved beyond a shadow of a doubt which side the electorate is on. And if anything, this debacle will just harden voters’ opinions against them.

Then, come the end of January, Congress is likely to go through a similar shutdown. (They set themselves up for it.)

This time, though, Democrats have insured that SNAP will still continue and that most government jobs will be safe, including many government paychecks for the duration of any shutdown.

Democrats also saved the filibuster, protecting us from Trump creating his many visions of voter suppression. At least we can slow them down.

It’s not like the Democrats came away without winning anything. They did make modest gains.

Baby steps, people.

Trump and his cronies have screwed up the government so bad that it’s going to be a long, slow slog getting back to anything resembling normalcy.

So here is my prediction.

At the end of January, we will go through another long shutdown battle.

Trump will continue emulating Marie Antoinette. (He literally can’t help himself.)

He’s also gonna continue his obvious mental degeneration. It will be impossible to ignore.

Even more people will get pissed off at this administration and his cronies.

The high healthcare premiums might even cause the public to insist on Medicare for all.

By next November, the electorate is gonna be so pissed off that MAGA will be relegated to the dustbin of history. The term “blue tsunami” won’t be nearly adequate enough to describe the midterm election. MAGA will go down to a resounding defeat.

And even though one of them will still be in the White House, sanity will prevail in the House and the Senate, and he will be the lamest of lame ducks.

MAGA doesn’t have the capability of looking two steps ahead. They brought this on themselves, and they will eat it.

So everybody, keep your chins up. All is not lost, and much is to gain. Don’t change what you’re doing, just get louder.

We got this. 💙

machine from the rep party will take advantage of this win.

Also, this is what the Lincoln Project referred to after the election wins with "don't screw up now", but they have.

I hope the optimism of the original post from SimpleMan turns to be true but...for one, the MAGAts will find a way to convince themselves that all the suffering is because of Democrats, so I have no hope they will wake up. We shall see, won't we?

I see your point and I think you are correct.

Dems saved the filibuster. 👍

Dems put the Republicans on notice over ACA - they have 2 choices 1) refuse the vote or 2) vote it down. Either way they own it.

Dems assured SNAP will continue.

Dems saved some RIFs of Federal employees and, hopefully, back pay.

I also agree the Marie Antoinette moments and his flagging energy will be apparent to the nation.

But (there’s that word!) a lot can happen between now and 2026. Democrats must change leadership for younger people and Democrats over 70 should retire (I’m 75).

We Democrats need a strong message of who WE are and not who THEY are. There’s a lot of sound bites and photos to back this up. More Reagan clips would be helpful. Stop running against Trump and run for working Americans.

Democrats must stop responding to the Republican narrative about LGBTQ folks. Everytime a Republican brings up transgender or gay marriage - let’s talk about Project 2025 defunding Gaullaudet University, and closing the Office of Special Education.

… Project 2025 undermine public education, a fundamental pillar of our democracy. Specifically, they recommend that the next far-right administration redirect taxpayer dollars intended for K-12 public education to fund private and religious schools for the wealthy; roll back Title IX, which prohibits discrimination based on sex; eradicate Head Start; block student debt cancellation programs and increase monthly payments for student loan borrowers; censor anti-racist curricula that teach tolerance in schools; and eliminate school nutrition programs, particularly for children experiencing food insecurity during the summer when they lack access to school meals.

More

And much, much more.

Edited to add - Epstein, Epstein, Epstein, Maxwell is a sexual abuser, too. Just because she is a woman doesn’t mean she can’t/won’t abuse more young girls in the future.

The Senate Bill isn't the same one the House passed. Mike Johnson will have to reconvene the House to vote on it again or the shutdown continues. No more excuses, he has to swear in Adelita Grijalva now. She will sign the discharge petition now and we will have the 218 signatures.

The elections last week proved that people can still be persuaded to vote for Democrats in large numbers (given the alternative consequences) even while the party as a whole maintains record low approval ratings.

The "progressives" caused us to lose in 2000. I've only ever found one who said supporting Nader instead of Gore was a mistake. In 2016 18% of Bernie voters ended up voting for Trump. Any apologies ever? Nope! They sat it out last time too. They never learn and never change. Right now David Hogg is leading them with the message that Dems aren't fighting back. Now they have an excuse. Just blame the whole party for the actions of a few and voila! They can go against the party again. They never learn and never care who they hurt.

You're assigning way too much power to a very small segment of voters. All elections are different and the 2026 midterms will be unique. I am also super confident that it will be one of the biggest landslides for Democrats in US history. The shutdown deal does not change those dynamics at all. Disagree with me if you must, but a year from now I will have been proven right.

And we lost millions who votes for Biden in 2020 but didn't vote for Harris in 2024. Pollsters said the main reason for those who didn't show this time was complaints about Democrats not fighting enough. The same thing the Hogg folks are saying now.

... really could be quite simple. The House and Senate already get gold-plated healthcare, and if they stay in office long enough to qualify, they get it for life. I have posed this question many times, but here it comes again: We taxpayers foot the bill for their gold-plated healthcare, so why in hell can't we enjoy the same benefits given to politicians that only work six months a year, if that, all ON OUR DIME?
If the witless skidmark demolishing the White House and the entire nation thinks we can afford to piss away $40 billion bailing out the witless skidmark driving Argentina off a cliff, we should be able to do what every civilized nation in the world already does: Provide universal healthcare!

Now, I realize that keeping healthcare tied to one's place of employment is a boon to corporations – I can't count the number of times I've heard someone say, "I only stay in this place for the health insurance" – but even those greed-crazed assholes must have some sense of self-preservation, and the alarm bells should be ringing in their ears but good by now, telling them that they'd better get on board with this, or they're going down in flames. Or, what with all the thinly veiled references of late to Marie Antoinette and her fate, I'm sure there are plans for a do-it-yourself guillotine online somewhere. Choose wisely, corporatists.

For the terminally obtuse, that last paragraph was
