The Real Reason Dems Caved on Shutdown Will Make You Want to Scream

Really not sure I buy this but

https://newrepublic.com/post/202948/real-reason-democrats-caved-shutdown-obamacare-midterms

Those senators included Dick Durbin, Catherine Cortez Masto, Jacky Rosen, Maggie Hassan, Jeanne Shaheen, John Fetterman, and Tim Kaine, as well as independent Angus King. All eight lawmakers are either retiring or won’t face another election for several years, making the alleged behind-the-scenes rationale for the crumbling stalemate even more asinine.

More than a dozen House and Senate Democrats expressed anxiety that actually preserving premium subsidies for the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced premium tax credits through their shutdown demands could strip them of a winning issue in the coming midterms, reported The New York Times. Their secondary anxiety involved the powerful Senate filibuster, fearing that conservatives might actually bow to Donald Trump’s demands to ax the disruptive legislative tool.

“The political logic of the shutdown fight was inverted: If Democrats got the tax credits extended—if they ‘won’—they would be solving a huge electoral problem for Republicans,” reported the Times. “If Republicans successfully allowed the tax credits to expire—if they ‘won’—they would be handing Democrats a cudgel with which to beat them in the election

when the inevitable "cave" came. In other words, more than those 8 deserve criticism if anyone does.

the rest of the Dem Senators held to their principles but these 7 Dem and 1 Ind. Senators decided to cross party lines and take the word of the lying repigs that they'll allow a vote on extending the ACA subsidies, even if, and that's big if, they do keep their promise, and it passes, the House will never allow a vote with Jackoff Johnson refusing to commit to bringing it to the floor for a vote and there is no way Been A Dick Donald would sign it into law.

Really? You really believe this?

These 7 were selected strategically for political purposes, to provide cover for the rest of them. If any of these people actually had principles and refused they would have just found someone else.

They’ve given up on the subsidies. That’s done. The whole premise of this “deal” is preposterous.

Jeffries:

"I certainly believe that Senate Democrats, the overwhelming majority of Senate Democrats led by Chuck Schumer, have waged a valiant fight over the last seven weeks, defeating the partisan Republican spending bill 14 or 15 different times, week after week after week, and continue to oppose this effort of passing legislation that does not address the Republican health care crisis by extending the Affordable Care Act tax credits.

But the fight is getting ready to shift back to the House where we're going to work hard to hold the Republicans accountable. All of these loudmouths on the House Republican conference side who's been saying for the last several weeks that we have to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits. Now is their chance.

This week they have to come back from their seven week prolonged taxpayer funded Republican vacation. They can no longer hide. They can no longer hide. Mike Johnson apparently still hiding. Refused to even answer a single question today. That's extraordinary.

But they're not going to be able to hide this week when they return from their vacation.

Speaking of the House, uh, Speaker Johnson has not committed holding a vote on subsidies even though the Senate agreement would have them do so. What do you say to that? And then also, what do you think that would do to the relationship between Republicans and Democrats on the House?

Well, the failure of Republicans to address the health care crisis that they've created in the House and in the Senate is no surprise because House and Senate Republicans multiple times this year have been given an opportunity to vote to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits. And multiple times this year already in the context of the debate around their one big ugly bill, they voted against unanimously voted against extending the Affordable Care Act tax credits.

So over the last several weeks, it's become increasingly difficult from the for them to hide from their position as it relates to the healthcare of the American people. And, House Democrats, joined by our colleagues in the Senate, we're not going to stop the fight. We're going to continue to lean into the fight over the next few days and beyond until we actually get an outcome that makes life better for workingclass Americans."

conducive to watching a video. I also hate posts with no summary of the point. It's a wasted click, no matter how good the post may or may not be.

Adding- thanks for that, even a short summary is really helpful

Not sure I buy it. What I do think is that it's not a coincidence that the 8 who voted for this are not up for reelection. That shows that the Dems know that this "deal" is poison at the ballot box. Still, memories are short and a year is several lifetimes in politics these days. So it seems to me that our only option at this point is to HAMMER and I mean HAMMER (and not politely in case I stuttered) that R's are responsible for healthcare now They own it and it is their fault. I have to say that I enjoyed Jeffries this morning in his press conference calling "Dr." Oz a "rando" and a "joke". I hope he continues to bring that fire because Rs are gonna try to make him the face of whatever BS healthcare scam they come up with.

Especially in Red States where their media has only been Fox throughout the shutdown.

Will the House have to come back into session when the shutdown ends?
