The levies the highest the White House has moved to impose on a specific product since the start of President Trumps crackdown on imports come from the US 15% baseline tariff on European Union goods plus a punishing 92% levy over accusations that Italian pasta makers have been undercutting US competitors.
The Commerce Department says the penne purveyors have been violating antidumping laws, exporting their products to the US market at a very low price to gain an advantage over local businesses.

Along with Pasta Garofalo, La Molisana and Rummo, the impacted pasta brands include Agritalia, Aldino, Antiche Tradizioni Di Gragnano, Barilla, Gruppo Milo, Pastificio Artigiano Cav. Giuseppe Cocco, Pastificio Chiavenna, Pastificio Liguori, Pastificio Sgambaro and Pastificio Tamma.
What if goodfellas want all that tariff money back?
And payment is late?

This could be a bonanza for Democrats. In a photo from the Spurious photo agency, fellas are exiting DNC Headquarters after discussing "Affordability". It is hoped that they will help defeat "Mario Combover" and his anti-immigrant goons.

(57,135 posts)Thats bullshit. Its always more expensive, and thats before the tariffs.
Its like saying Italian linens are cheap. They are the best but also the most expensive. Italians just know how to make fine things.

My favorite along with the fusilli lunghi bucati.

Anyway, I already stocked up and have the nice pasta machine to make my own fresh pasta.

(2,250 posts)Pretty sure that's not how this works. These companies don't have their pasta on the shelves on consignment, they are purchased by importers and distributors, and then retailers set the prices. That's who pays the tariffs. Americans, basically.
So with a 107% tariff on the Italian pasta, the pasta companies would have to LOWER their prices dramatically in order to compete with other brands because the 107% will be added to the cost to the importer. The importers would stop buying the pasta from the Italian company because it costs so much more now.
Then again it's the NY Post

(6,404 posts)Barilla and Dececco here in Munich are about $3 a pound, unless on sale. I can get a house brand bronze extruded for less. If you go to Eataly pasta is much more.

(6,404 posts)Don't know what it is selling for here. According to FRED average zuS prices are at $1.20 lb.
12% of the market is Italian imports.
Actually thr price shouldn't double because the tariffs are on the price paid by the importer. This will be lower than retail. I have no idea what the mark up is.
