Utah court tosses legislature's all Repub congressional map; replaces it with plaintiffs' Dem friendly map

Mark Gaber @markpgaber
BREAKING: Utah court enjoins the state's congressional map, Map C, as violating Prop 4. Orders implementation of map submitted by our plaintiffs, Map 1:

The legislature's map was drawn to be a 4-0 Republican map where all four districts were won by Trump in 2024 and it split Salt Lake County several times. The plaintiffs' map is a 3R-1D map with the 1 Dem district being contained within Salt Lake County and is a safe Dem seat as it is a Harris +24 district.

This new map replaces the current 4-0 Republican map for 2026; but the judge's decision could be appealed. However, the legislature's map creates two Repub districts that were only won by single digits by Trump and both could easily flip to Dems if 2026 is a moderately strong Dem turnout year a little below 2018's turnout level. Repubs would be wise not to appeal; but Trump may compel them to do so.
