The post showcases the Anthem Veterans Memorial in Anthem, Arizona, engineered so its five pillarsrepresenting U.S. military branchescast shadows forming "11:11" around the Great Seal exactly at 11:11 a.m. on November 11, honoring the 1918 World War I armistice.

From Google:
The Armistice ending World War I was signed at 5:00 a.m. on November 11, 1918, though fighting did not stop until 11:00 a.m. on the same day. The agreement was signed in Marshal Foch's railway car in Compiègne, France, and the delay was to allow time for the news to reach all troops on the front lines.
Signing time: 5:00 a.m. on November 11, 1918.
Ceasefire time: 11:00 a.m. on November 11, 1918, which is why the date is remembered as 11/11.
Location: A railway carriage in the Forest of Compiègne, France.
Reason for delay: To give commanders time to communicate the end of the war to their troops, as communication methods were not instantaneous.

(11,434 posts)3. I've always wondered why the alignment was planned for 11:11 a.m.
The armistice was signed at 5:00 a.m. to establish the ceasefire time for exactly 11:00 a.m. the same day. Thus, it became the 11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month. No "minutes" were recognized.
Google agrees:
The misconception that the Armistice for World War I happened at 11:11 is incorrect; it happened at exactly 11:00 AM on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. The number 11:11 is often a retropsective and erroneous association made by people fascinated with patterns and not the actual time the fighting stopped. The 11 AM time was chosen because it was a simple and convenient time for the agreement to take effect after it was signed at 5 AM that morning.
