Former Capitol Hill aide Jordan Wood is seriously considering dropping out of Maines U.S. Senate race to run instead in the states 2nd Congressional District, according to two sources familiar with the situation.
Woods decision would mean that the states marquee Senate contest would effectively become a one-on-one race between oyster farmer Graham Platner and Gov. Janet Mills
It would also add a second prominent Democrat to the primary for the 2nd District, a seat held by retiring Democratic Rep. Jared Golden. The states auditor, Matt Dunlap, is also running in the district, which is Republican-leaning and considered a top pickup opportunity for the GOP during next years midterm election.
Its unclear whether Wood, who once served as chief of staff to former Democratic Rep. Katie Porter, would be the preferred pick of national Democrats, who are eager to hold the seat. Democrats have said they need a candidate similar to the retiring Golden, who can appeal to Republican voters in the conservative district.

Rep. Jared Golden (D-Maine) says Democrats are lying about their shutdown strategy as the impasse over funding the government nears the one-month mark. Golden, who was the only Democrat to vote for a Republican-backed spending measure to fund the government last month, told The Wall Street Journal that Democrats shouldnt use the shutdown as leverage to advance their health care demands. Democrats have been urging Republicans to extend the enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies, which are set to expire at the end of this year. Experts have said Americans health insurance premiums could increase if those subsidies are not extended.
But Golden argued Democrats should keep the health care issue separate from reopening the government, noting it was his own colleagues who included a sunset for the subsidies in 2022. Im just uncomfortable lying about the strategy to win and shutting down the government. Weve never been the party that does that, Golden told the Journal in an article published Sunday. The government shutdown, which began Oct. 1 after Congress failed to strike a funding deal, has sent rippling effects through Washington, D.C., and beyond. Many federal workers have been left without pay or furloughed, leaving them to rely on food banks and other services.

Golden told the Journal that while he favors extending some subsidies, he believes Republicans concerns about the issue should be a starting point for both parties to come to the table and negotiate. Some Republicans have discussed restricting eligibility for the subsidies to a certain income level. Im not willing to shut down the government over health care subsidies for households making $300,000, Golden told the Journal. I think we have a deficit problem in this country that neither party is showing any ability or political will to address.
Its not the first time Golden has broken from his party. He was also the lone House Democrat who voted for a Republican-crafted spending bill to avoid a government shutdown in March. He previously supported President Trumps tariffs and was one of the few Democrats to vote in favor of the SAVE Act, which would require proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections.

(4,002 posts)on with Republicans to support anti-Biden measures on immigration, energy policy, and the budget, as well as SAVE. He is a DINO, but am told he is only Democrat who can get elected there.
I guess we will now see. But for a few years now, he has been one of my least favorite Dems.

(53,014 posts)Jared Golden (D-Maine), Adam Gray (D-Calif.), Don Davis (D-N.C.), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Wash.), Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.) and Henry Cuellar (D-Texas.), voted in support of the bill.
Gottheimer was the only one of my 6 least favourite House Dems to vote No, but Blue Dog Whip Adam Gray took his spot and voted Yes.
That's why I'm glad he's not running again. But he's probably going to be a problem child hereafter on the outside.
