Thune says they will not extend the ACA subsidies unless tougher abortion

restrictions are put in place. That was a great agreement you got there, Democratic senators.

1. Not so much fooled as wrongheaded premise about the battle

It seems to me there is widespread false premise that the only "win" would be getting an extension of the ACA subsidies. But there were two ways to win:

1) Trumpublicans ended the shutdown by adding an ACA subsidy extension

2) Trumpublicans ended the shutdown by jettisoning the filibuster.

The shutdown was going to end. Under increasing pressure from the malignant narcissist-in-chief and rank and file dread of their constituents hating on them over Thanksgiving Dinner, Thune would have ended the filibuster. The result:

-Instead of saying, "Why oh why did the Dems subject us to this pain for nothing," more would be livid with: "You mean you could have ended this by getting rid of the filibuster before it even started!!!"

-Democrats would be the ones that stood strong, doing battle on behalf of the American people with the leverage they had right up to the point that that leverage was forcibly taken from them.

-Our Democratic electeds would have demonstrated an unprecedented strength.

-People who support the Democratic Party would be riding as high as they were on Friday. Enraged by the ACA loss, but proud as hell of the strength demonstrated.

-The depravity and cruelty shown by the felon during the shutdown would be all the more evident as his Trumpublicans took 100% responsibly for the horror show.

If you are angry, as I am, when we contact Democratic leaders I think we need to be crystal clear that they failed us, not be failing to get their demands met, they failed us because in this fight we had faith that they would (1) make their demand, (2) hold out until either (a) MAGA R's met the demand, or (b) MAGA R's went nuclear and ended the shutdown on their own, without the complicity or capitulation of the Democrats.

Dems are playing 3D chess putting the GOP into the corner with healthcare. They knew the rats would take the cheese. Healthcare increases are now fully in the GOP's laps. Bonus as predictable the rats go to their losing abortion stance. How quick they forget about the Blue Wave last week. We the people are done with their shit!!

We have to dismantle abortion rights for a vote. We have been played, and until we change leadership, it will continue.

Hang it around Trump's neck.

Just like the betrayals of Rescission 2025 needed to be wailed about from the rooftops.

This is (what Republicans arrogantly believe is) the art of breaking the deal.

Extending the reach of the anti-choice Right into majority blue states as the price for opening the federal government?

Less of Trump!

Every time the word "puppet" is sung here, replace it with "Republican"!---

Like this:

(Male voice):
When I was a young boy, I'd climb into my bed.
My mother would turn off the light, and pat my little
head.
She'd speak of lessons she had learned,
Important wisdom passed along.
Then she'd stand in my shadowed room
And sing this little song.

(Female/high voice):
Never trust a Republican,
Republicans are un--true.
No matter what the Republican says,
he don't care bout' you.
Never trust a Republican,
Republicans are in-sin-cere.
Some how every-one finds out,
what you whisper in a Republicans ear.[

When I was a young girl,
I got a Republican for my birth-day.
We went everywhere together,
we played, and laughed, and sang.

But the Republican started lying,
and taking things that didn't belong to it.
And saying inappropriate things at my parents parties.
And one night when I was asleep, the Republican ran away.

Never trust a Republican,
or the feelings that they share.
There is something not quite right,
in a Republicans stare.

Never give your heart to a Republican,
always stay on your guard.
Republicans will betray you.....
Republicans are really weird.

When I was a tiny girl,
my aunt had a little lamb Republican.
She'd use it as a oven mitt,
and take a hot casserole out of the oven.
Then she'd chase me around the house,
with the Republican on her hand.
Screaming..
"I BURNT MY TONGUE, I BURNT MY TONGUE!"

Never trust a Republican,
Republicans are un--true.
No matter what the Republican says,
he don't care bout' you.

If anything replaces it, it will be another handout to the insurance industry and will do little to help those that need the subsidies to afford insurance.

It would probably be some sort sleazy, bogus MAGA “REAL FEMINIST ” movement that kills suffrage if they can go it:

https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2024/08/allie-beth-stuckey-conservative-womanhood/679470/

Trust the reliably sleazy Atlantic to write a sunshiny piece on this horrible woman. The Atlantic boasts the awful, Pronatalist and anti-abortion but from the “left”, Liz Bruenig as well as the abundantly douchey, stale centrist shill Derek Thompson, who is now reducing Mamdani’s win to affordability only.

It would find support from the types of people who consider this rubbish feminist:

https://www.salon.com/2025/11/06/alls-fair-and-the-problem-with-kim-kardashian/

Sadly, I can imagine the Sinclair Lewis quote applying here..when they come for suffrage it will be weirdly, however unconvincingly, tricked out as feminist (i.e. with a parade of Maga women-MTG, Boebert, a collection of sleazy influencers, Candace Owens etc spear-heading it).

This is a historic low for women’s rights.

24. There was a recent thread about Durbin addressing Thune
Wed Nov 12, 2025, 01:24 AM

Durbin told Thune that he needed Thune to come through on the ACA vote because Durbin’s little group was “sticking their necks out” for him. My comment on that was to note that “sticking her neck out” is the last thing Marie Antoinette ever did.

Thune has to be laughing his ass off, thinking, “I can’t believe it, he swallowed the whole thing, hook, line and sinker.” I guess by now, Durbin has to be thinking the same thing.
