Arguing with a brain dead Magat on FB. I can't believe the two of us went to the same schools. He was originally in the same grade as me, but I think I remember one of the teachers in Catholic School flunked him. One of their occasionally good decisions, if so.
He argued that he doesn't want Socialism because he is too used to having toilet paper, electricity and clean water. Like gee he doesn't think those countries with a social market system have those things too? His response was well they may have some amenities but not as good and strong as the USA. He also pulled out the old chestnut American love it or leave it. So I pulled out my usual reply so if you don't like paying taxes, not having a national religion, etc why don't you move. Then I added you know I personally wouldn't want to live in a place like Russia where you get imprisoned or worse for criticizing Putin, but apparently some do, so go there.
Just don't applaud that behavior here. I also said I don't agree it's right to harm the many who followed the rules just to punnish a minority of scammers. I also pointed out that work requirements maybe fine and dandy for those who actually work, but choose not to. Then I asked does he think the infirmed elderly in nursing homes and young children need to be required to go work in sweat shops because some of his side has actually proposed things that are pretty close to that.
In closing I said given that many nursing homes and rural hospitals have already closed, does he really buy the assurances that working people aren't going to be hurt too. I closed with but any rate we aren't accomplishing anything by arguing on FB. Then I blocked him, probably childish, but I was just done arguing with someone who thinks gutting EPA regulations is actually going to ensure cleaner drinking water.

(4,883 posts)He said he spent a year in France and it was horrible so now he believes all the UK has terrible living conditions. 🤦♀️ He's right that I have never been to the UK, but I have been to Canada and didn't see a lot of people looking like their lives were horrific. I also don't see a lot of people from the UK complaining about their lives on the social media sites. They are sending their sympathies to those of us who didn't vote for DT. Also you're right it's established fact that the Nordic countries have a higher standards of living.

(4,754 posts)And most of them were apolitical before Piss came along. Thats the thing with this asshole, he got a lot of people who never cared about politics at all believing theyre now experts. Theyre the worst to deal with. They dont actually know anything, they just parrot talking points they get from Facebook or whomever the right wing influencer of the day may be.
The exceptions are puzzling. Like the valedictorian from both my class and my brothers class are also MAGAts. One is a top doctor in the area. The other is in real estate. Id like to think its merely about taxes but they also go hard on the stupid culture war stuff.
Being smart doesnt make you good hearted or wise.

(4,883 posts)It's just amazing to me that someone who was taught the same songs we used to sing in church thinks it's okay to let people who truly need help suffer, just because his nose is out of joint that he had to have a job, and someone else is getting something he's not.
He should be grateful he was born and stayed healthy enough to work, and not with a disability or a life threatening illness. Not everyone gets to say the same. We don't always get to choose all of our life's circumstances.
It's corny but when I heard and sang lyrics like "when I was hungry, you gave me to eat, when I was thirsty you gave me to drink, now enter into the home of my father. For what so ever you do for the least of my brothers that you do unto me," they resonated to my core and I believed that is always what we should do. It's hard to accept some people heard and sang the same thing, and just went "fuck that," and still claim their "christian."
