IL-04: Retiring Rep. Jess 'Chuy' Garca's chief of staff launches bid for House seat

Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García’s (D-Ill.) chief of staff has launched a campaign to replace her outgoing boss, who is retiring after his current term.

Patty García, who is unrelated to the congressman, touted her progressive positions and experience as a staffer on Capitol Hill in a press release Wednesday announcing her bid to represent Illinois’s 4th Congressional District.

“It’s time for leaders in Congress with the courage to actually fight for working people,” Patty García said, pledging to address the cost of living, a pathway to citizenship for migrants and to “hold the billionaires who are eroding our democracy accountable.”

Last Friday, Chuy García, who has represented the district spanning parts of Chicago and the Cook County suburbs since January 2019, announced he was not seeking reelection. The deputy whip of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Chuy García sits on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the House Judiciary Committee.
