A proposed ballot measure in California that would increase taxes on its wealthiest residents has Pro-Trump billionaire Peter Thiel considering cutting ties with the Golden State, and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) felt compelled to weigh in on the news with a sarcastic quip.
Peter Thiel is leaving California if we pass a 1% tax on billionaires for 5 years to pay for healthcare for the working class facing steep Medicaid cuts, Khanna said Friday night in a social media post on X. I echo what [former President Franklin D. Roosevelt] said with sarcasm of economic royalists when they threatened to leave, I will miss them very much.
The ballot measure is known as the California Billionaire Tax Act, and would impose a one-time 5% tax on the net worth of residents and part-time residents worth more than $1 billion. To appear on next years ballot, it must receive just over 870,000 signatures, and is currently in the signature-gathering phase.
And, while its unclear whether the measure will receive enough signatures, some of the states billionaires including Thiel are already considering leaving the state entirely, The New York Times reported Friday.

Excerpt...
In other interviews, Thiel has focused on the biblical prophecy of apocalypse that he feels could come to pass as a result of the destructive technology unleashed since Hiroshima in 1945.
Nuclear proliferation is something of a close family interest. Thiels father was involved in the clandestine drive of apartheid South Africa to acquire nuclear-grade uranium in Namibia.
What he doesnt mention is that his firms own technology is bringing that apocalypse ever closer. Palantir, a defence tech firm, is a major investor and creator of AI technologies. For over a decade it has received major contracts from across the US government - including the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and the FBI.
As a co-founder of PayPal, early investor in Facebook and founder of Palantir, Thiel is also currently taking over the UKs NHS data under a £480m (approximately $600m) UK government contract signed in 2023. His views of public healthcare are clear: "Highways create traffic jams, welfare creates poverty, schools make people dumb and the NHS makes people sick," he said.
Palantir technologies are deployed to both US-backed wars in Gaza and Ukraine. As Responsible Statecraft reported last year, "Palantir has tested in real time its new Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP) on the Ukrainian war front. It has been described as an intelligence and decision-making system that can analyze enemy targets and propose battle plans. Other Palantir security technologies include AI for predictive policing and surveillance."

Big picture view:
The presence of these billionaires at Trumps inauguration reflects their alignment with his pro-business policies, which include tax reforms and deregulation initiatives likely to benefit their industries.
It also highlights Trumps ongoing influence among tech moguls and global elites, despite political controversies surrounding his leadership.

JD Vance Is An Investor In A Far Right Video Platform Filled With Neo-Nazi Content
By Hunter Walker
Talking Points Memo, August 1, 2024
Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) has been making headlines for his rocky rollout since being named former President Donald Trumps running mate last month. The bad headlines and poll numbers have been driven by Vances extreme comments about childless cat ladies, abortion, and more. Well, along with extreme comments, Vance has some extreme investments.
Vance has had a six-figure stake in Rumble, an online video platform. The company has played host to Russian propaganda and to far-right personalities like Stew Peters and Tim Pool. It has also featured even more extreme content, including explicitly neo-Nazi images and themes like this song touting the Reich and calling for Jews to be placed in ovens from a dissident rapper with a dedicated page on the site. The site features a plethora of channels and videos dedicated to the concept of white genocide, which is a core belief for white supremacists. It also hosts channels for explicitly white supremacist organizations including VDare and Patriot Front, which has led masked demonstrations around the country.
A former Marine, Vance was elected in 2022 after a career as a bestselling author and venture capitalist. In both the financial world and as he rose in politics, Vance has been backed by the Silicon Valley investor and right-wing donor Peter Thiel. The pair co-founded a firm, Narya Capital, in 2020. In keeping with Thiels preferred styling, the company was named after a reference to the Lord of the Rings fantasy novels.
In 2021, Narya Capital made a major investment in Rumble. The investment, which made Narya one of Rumbles top shareholders, also gave the firm a seat on Rumbles board. Financial disclosures filed by Vance in conjunction with his Senate bid also show that he made a personal investment in Rumble that was valued between $100,000 and $250,000.
Snip
The stake is notable because it represents a direct financial link between Vance and a key outlet for some of the most extreme elements of the far right. Vances stake in Rumble was the subject of a New York Times piece during his Senate race in 2022. That story focused on Rumble hosting the Kremlin-backed propaganda network RT, but gave less attention to the extensive hate speech on the site.

(15,337 posts)the English working class is out in the streets knocking heads. I have a former friend over there who has hit the streets with the Tories in those riots. He tells me that the Labour Party is now dead, dead, dead! and says that with some glee, as if he and his friends have accomplished something that is actually good.
At the same time, the working schmucks in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland can look forward to the dirtbag thief Thiel stealing lots of money from NHS off the top to line his own filthy pockets, and screw working people across the UK. Soon, Brits will be able to look forward to the same evil shit we face here in Murika.
Shitty, rationed healthcare with financially crippling copays - a confusing system designed to extort the maximum money from sick, vulnerable people so shareholders can have HIGHER PROFITS, CEOs can make appalling incomes for all the 'value' they add
and finally they can be like us and bask in HEALTH CARE DEBT!
That's pretty fucking sick. We have to get rid of these fucking billionaire parasites.

(28,618 posts)Avoiding a billion dollar expense by simply picking a new place to live sounds like an easy decision.
And its likely much more than that since his net worth is tied up in assets that would draw large capital gains taxes federally and in California if he had to sell them to pay the tax.

(28,618 posts)and... of course... he would then pay $50M/year in interest on the loan with no earning asset to offset it. That would pretty quickly exceed the amount of the avoided income tax.
Much easier to just say "I don't live here any more" and sell his Hollywood Hills home. He has much nicer ones in Hawaii and Florida.
unblock
(55,869 posts)Or otherwise do whatever is needed to avoid the tax entirely.
Just disputing the capital gains point. If he decides he can live with paying the tax, or can't easily avoid it, then he'll finance it rather than selling assets at a profit.

(1,459 posts)would be long gone before any tax on the rich every comes about and works it's way through all the courts. And then of course this Republican Supreme Court would find some tiny technical excuse for not allowing it to happen.
I can only imagine that it would be extremely hard for the U.S. Government to know how much money they have, because it has been offshored long long ago, invested and compounding their money without the U.S. States and U.S. Federal Government ever even knowing about it.............
The Rich even get credit cards from these secretive nations, and the rich charge every last thing they can, and many years ago our government, I think during the WBush? years, cannot subpoena an individuals credit card statements from any other countries banks.......
If things continue this way, in the near future, maybe at the most a year or two, The Uber Rich top 1% will have succeeded in a wealth transfer of all the U.S. money to themselves.........Leaving the other 99% in destitute as mere serfs and peasants.
All they have to do, is once again, trash the stock market like they have done many times in the past, dating back to Reagan's "Black Tuesday"? All of the retirement funds, and investment accounts holding people's future retirements are invested in the stock markets, etc etc etc and BOOM......An immediate repeat of the Great Depression, but far far worse this time around, and permanent.
If you want a description of the great depression, read or re-read Steinbecks GRAPES OF WRATH, and find a day by day accounting of people trying to exist, having lost everything, and what the Hoovervilles were like. And how the Corporations took full advantage of the situation that they in fact created. The Uber rich would like nothing better than to destroy all the rules and regulations that FDR put in place to pull us out of the depression and get rid of the Robber Barrons and Gilded Age. And here we sit, on the edge of what happened in the 20's...... De-ja-vue (sp?) all over again......

He was able to become a great success because of his own skills, but ALSO the society around him who (with their ancestors) not only labored, but built the country, made the roads, provided the schools, etc - they created the infrastructure and atmosphere (free market) where he was able to thrive.
THAT is the expanded answer as to why he should be paying his fair share.

I bet his true effective tax rate is in the single digits.
Here is the truth about taxation in the US. Anybody making millions in annual income has ample opportunity to shelter their income. And as they get into the billions, that becomes practically tax-free, hidden in numerous corporations, many offshore.
Meanwhile, the working people pay a multitude of taxes, most of which are regressive, hitting low income people the hardest: gas tax, sales tax, social security and other payroll taxes, cell phone taxes, toll roads, etc. It is endless.
