A Lincoln Public Schools staff position that Gov. Jim Pillen recently called “woke garbage” is seen by others as a critical measure of support for students.

Lincoln Public Schools is hiring a LGBTQ+ advocate after the person who previously held that role took a job elsewhere.

The role, which has existed since 2022, calls for someone with previous advocacy experience who can provide cultural and academic support to students and their families. The position pays $21.08 an hour — equivalent to a salary of about $44,000 as a full-time role.
