Credit cards cancelled, Google accounts closed: ICC judges on life under Trump sanctions

Kimberly Prost and Luz del Carmen Ibáñez Carranza vow US reprisals will not affect work of international criminal court

When the Canadian Kimberly Prost learned Donald Trump’s administration had imposed sanctions on her, it came as a shock.

For years, she has sat as a judge at the international criminal court, weighing accusations of war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity; now she is on the same list as terrorists and those involved in organised crime. “It really was a moment of a bit of disbelief,” she said.

The fallout was both material and psychological. As her credit cards, Amazon and Google accounts were cancelled, she reeled from what she described as a “direct and flagrant attack” on one of the world’s most prominent courts.

“These are coercive measures designed to attack our ability to do our jobs objectively and independently,” she said. “We want people to appreciate how wrong this is.”

Since Trump returned to power last year, his administration has worked steadily to hobble the Hague-based court. To date, 11 of the court’s officials – including the chief prosecutor and eight judges – have been placed under sanctions, subjecting them to measures that include bans on travel to the US and fines and prison sentences for American companies who provide them services.

Ultimately, American companies will pay the price because they will lose access to other markets.

Also, attorneys from Canada and Spain wrote charging documents accusing George Bush and Dick Cheney of war crimes over the Iraq invasion.

And killing off the international rule of law as a side benefit.

In an executive order last year, Trump accused the court of engaging in “illegitimate and baseless actions targeting America and our close ally Israel”, suggesting that the sanctions were in retribution for pursuing investigations into US and Israeli officials. Neither the US nor Israel is among the 125 signatories of the Rome statute, the 1998 treaty that gave rise to the court.

“Visa, Mastercard … the urgent issue is our payment system. Trump can cut everything off,” Lalucq said. “The rest is poetry. I urgently request that the commission organise a European Airbus for payment systems: you can’t say you weren’t warned.”

Cutting off ICC Judge company credit cards to subpoena-bombing SM companies to get information on anti-ICE protests.

Where do they find the time. I picture entire rooms of Trumpist apparatchiks planning revenge and coercion 24/7.

the UN and Hague had a major investigation into Syria's Assad and Putin for international war crimes and crimes against humanity........Russia/Putin had supplied Assad, the dictator of Syria, with Chemical Weapons to use against the rebels who were trying to get Assad out of power. Assad had used the poisonous gas bombs to drop on suspected strongholds/towns of these rebels............The bombs had wiped out entire towns of people, Men, Women, Children, Babies and caused their horrific deaths.
The UN and Hague had gone in with their inspectors for a year, documenting/proving that Assad/Putin had violated the Geneva Convention by using chemical weapons. There was a U.S. Military base that had provided protection for the Rebels. As the investigation was being completed, (Trump told the U.S. Military base to BUG OUT, and immediately abandon the base, leaving everything for Assad/Putin to use).......The investigators were immediately ordered to get out, as their only protection was the U.S. Military that Trump had ordered to abandon. As the investigators loaded on their planes out of there, the area around the airport was already being bombed by Assad. The investigators barely got out, and returned to the Hague with all the documents/evidence of Assad/Putin's war crimes..........(and suspicion of Trump's complicity in aiding Putin/Assad).........I am not sure what happened from that point on as far as prosecuting all those individuals. However, it is reported that tthere are many nations that if Putin goes to, he will be arrested on the spot and sent to the Hague for Crimes Against Humanity, International War Crimes, and using chemical weapons per the Geneva Convention.......
