@AzPetrich
Why do Republicans say AOC is "just a bartender" when she has a masters degree in economics, but they don't say Markwayne Mullin is just a plumber?
HINT: racism and misogyny

(11,681 posts)We had an in-law come over in the later afternoon in the summer of 2018. This person was in our home for roughly 5 minutes before they started in with "the democrats". I piped up and said, "I'm a Democratic voter."
"Well, did you know Bill Clinton is still cheating on Hillary?"
I replied, "Oh really? You drive to upstate New York where they live and you tail Bill Clinton even with all the Secret Service detail that he has?"
I continued, "You want to talk about infidelity? Let's talk about infidelity. Donald Trump was screwing Marla Maples while still married to Ivana!"
"You mean Ivanka?"
I said, "Nooooo, not the daughter that Donald wants to fuck/date. I'm talking about his ex-wife Ivana that he screwed around on with Marla Maples. And let's not forget that divorce was granted at some point in 1992 and Marla became pregnant with Tiffany in the beginning of 1993. Then when Marla told him she was pregnant he basically asked her if she wanted to keep it and she did. He was willing to let her choose if she wanted an abortion."
I continued, "And then when Trump married this gray alien faced Melania, he was fucking Karen McDougal and Stormy Daniels, all while Melania was about to give birth or soon after giving birth to their son Barron. In fact, Karen McDougal went on television and publicly apologized to Melania for screwing her husband."
I asked, "Why is alright for a "Republican" to cheat and not for a "Democrat"?"
I don't really remember their answer but in the end their answer was, "I don't know."
The issue is that RW millionaires pay their RW media journalist some big bucks to lie and propagandized those who are easily manipulate. Keep them dumbed down, keep them angry and keep them voting against their own interest.

(26,402 posts)Both with your rebuttal AND with the fact that your in-law didn't constantly interrupt or attempt to over-talk you while you were making those valid points. A lot of right-wingers, when confronted with reality that they dislike, will try to shout people down.

She is not beholden to any billionaire either.
Whatever your race or gender, the more willing you are to take on the real power structure, the likelier it is that your qualifications, intelligence and character come under scrutiny.
She gets flack from purists as well as the powerful.
I am glad I am a scientist and not a politician. The tightrope act AOC especially has to pull is hard. Good for her though..she was one of the first of this new crop, many of whom I hope get in.
I am not American..but I live near the equator and it is so hot today, I actually feel like I am on fire. It would be hell without an ac.

https://www.salon.com/2026/03/09/democrats-should-go-all-in-on-texas-and-talarico/I do think that is a broadly popular strategy..Just from a systems perspective, even with the worst fascists, demagogues etc, a more comprehensive understanding of the factors that contribute to their success makes more sense than the typical athletic match, memes and WWE style of politics that these internet platforms have fostered.
DU is an older school message board and back in the day and still its biggest charm comes from some of the older posters who write about there experiences..
A return to that style of grassroots politics (as opposed to meme wars etc) could help since those seem to work out better for people who have no interest in governance and focus on winning alone. That approach works better for the sleazier party in any contest,
It does induce a type of jarring cognitive dissonance - especially as time goes on and you see multiple systems break repeatedly
A big part of the return of Trump I do think was the concerted effort by tech types like Andreessen and Musk on the one hand and that noxious Vinod Khosla/Mark Cuban on the other, because Lina Khan (one of President Bidens finest picks) represented a real threat to their increasing capture of society. If those guys get more of the spotlight*, as economic, ecological and social issues make themselves felt in ways that are increasingly harder to ignore, it is likely to help the dems.
Humans probably have an instinctive/intuitive understanding of concepts like homeostasis. That gets eroded over time on all levels by these junk producing, limits to growth testing societies. The medical field as opposed to these fucking idiots in business school, economics, computer software, communications systems, entertainment and warfare may provide a better set of approaches wrt dynamic systems models.

I am not saying economics/recreation/communication/comps have no role in society. But when it gets this out of balance, warped, skewed..
They are stripmining the planet and..
Total fucking idiots..
George E Billman. Front Physiol. 2020.
Abstract
The grand challenge to physiology, as was first described in an essay published in the inaugural issue of Frontiers in Physiology in 2010, remains to integrate function from molecules to intact organisms. In order to make sense of the vast volume of information derived from, and increasingly dependent upon, reductionist approaches, a greater emphasis must be placed on the traditional integrated and more holistic approaches developed by the scientists who gave birth to physiology as an intellectual discipline. Our understanding of physiological regulation has evolved over time from the Greek idea of body humors, through Claude Bernard's "milieu intérieur," to Walter Cannon's formulation of the concept of "homeostasis" and the application of control theory (feedback and feedforward regulation) to explain how a constant internal environment is achieved. Homeostasis has become the central unifying concept of physiology and is defined as a self-regulating process by which an organism can maintain internal stability while adjusting to changing external conditions. Homeostasis is not static and unvarying; it is a dynamic process that can change internal conditions as required to survive external challenges. It is also important to note that homeostatic regulation is not merely the product of a single negative feedback cycle but reflects the complex interaction of multiple feedback systems that can be modified by higher control centers. This hierarchical control and feedback redundancy results in a finer level of control and a greater flexibility that enables the organism to adapt to changing environmental conditions. The health and vitality of the organism can be said to be the end result of homeostatic regulation. An understanding of normal physiology is not possible without an appreciation of this concept. Conversely, it follows that disruption of homeostatic mechanisms is what leads to disease, and effective therapy must be directed toward re-establishing these homeostatic conditions. Therefore, it is the purpose of this essay to describe the evolution of our understanding of homeostasis and the role of physiological regulation and dysregulation in health and disease.
Keywords: Claude Bernard; Walter Cannon; control theory; cybernetics; feedback regulationnegative and positive; homeostasis; internal milieu; physiology.
I was just thinking that our poisonous media environment and special interests warp and disease the human gut instinct till President Camacho is the natural result.
Endless GDP growth with more and more junk like that fucking joke of a GPT thing, these torture porn adjacent forms of existence..
The gut instinct is not in itself a joke or a bad thing as long as it isnt George Bush etc..we are animals not machines..we are animals capable of the type of logical reasoning that allows us to build complex and complicated societies, but if you lay waste to both education broadly and confuse the human gut, common sense etc. you would end up with this nightmarish society where everyone knows stuff is broken, but these same parasitic robber barons and their molls and henchpersons break earth and rob us blind..bloody vandalizing, solipsistic or cultish narcissists. That lot is a collection of super-fit cancer cells.
And this other nightmarish type seems to be trying to emulate a damn dictyostelium fruiting body. Death where is thy sting?
