My personal weekly grocery bill has doubled from 0 to 0. Nothing fancy either. No alcohol, no lobsters, no steak.

(33,086 posts)Thats the fee a grocery chain charges the brand for the privilege of shelving their product. One SKU, one fee.
Grocery chains are making a killing.

(34,929 posts)and stop shelving another?

(33,086 posts)Ive never heard of a brand deliberately paying to keep another off the shelves.

(1,067 posts)But when Hagen Daz was having a major hissy fit about the existence of Ben and Jerry's, they forced a choice. If a store stocked B&Js, they would not be supplied with HD. Every store had to make a choice.
Auggie
(33,086 posts)Distribution is everything. As I recall it's like winning a lottery to be stocked. If you're in, you stay in. There's only so much shelf/freezer space.

(2,151 posts)the Federal Trade Commission had true power to enforce laws like False, or even "misleading' advertising......and they used it.
Corporations truly feared the FTC and adhered to rules and guidelines. Corporations like Campbells Soup, Zales Jewlers, Duncan Hines, etc etc who all got hammered...........
Then the FTC and Consumer Protection Groups got not just castrated, but emasculated by the Corporate Loving Republicans under Reagan, with him leading the charge......."Corporations will police themselves!!!!!"
Now it is the wild west as far as advertising, and deceptive trade practices........I see print ads and TV ads that are flagrant false advertising, with many of the other regulations trampled all over.......
I think it is a fair statement that the Republican Politicians are the best politcians, corporate money can, and has bought.
I suspect that we will soon see: The United States of America, with a new title: The United Corporations of America.....
The simplest textbook definition of FASCISM......is the merger of Corporations and Government.....
I could go on and on, about the Extreme Damages that the Reagan years, under HWBush's CABAL, have done to the middle and lower classes, that are still being seen today.......The massive tax cuts to the Upper Class, the huge increases in taxes to the middle and lower classes, removal of tax deductions for the middle class, outrageous increases in the allowable interest (usury) rates...............The list is endless.........

(34,929 posts)There was a product I liked that I used to get at WF.
But suddenly it disappeared and another more
expensive brand took its place.
Luckily I can get the old, cheaper brand at Sprouts.
Sprouts always has it at a better price, but that's
the only place I can get it since Natural Foods
moved out of the area.

(130,220 posts)I read in law school, Lange v. National Biscuit Co., in which Nabisco's cookie salesman was so aggressive about stocking store shelves with their cookies that he beat up a store manager, who sued Nabisco. https://law.justia.com/cases/minnesota/supreme-court/1973/43829-1.html
On May 1, 1969, Lynch came to the store managed by plaintiff to place previously delivered merchandise on the shelves. An argument developed between plaintiff and Lynch regarding Lynch's servicing of plaintiff's store. Lynch became very angry and started swearing. Plaintiff told Lynch to either stop swearing or leave the store, as children were present. Lynch then become uncontrollably angry, saying, "I ought to break your neck." He went behind the counter and dared plaintiff to fight. Plaintiff refused, whereupon Lynch proceeded to viciously assault him. Upon completion of the assault, Lynch proceeded to throw merchandise around the store and then left.
The store manager won the case. I assume Nabisco fired the cookie salesman. It's a jungle out there.

(3,875 posts)I'm not entirely sure this person is pointing a major finger at Trump.
In fact, I'm curious if this actually is a current posting. She says "in four years." With a start date of 2020, her comparison date is the 2024 election year.
Yup: Here it is from October 2024: https://americasbestpics.com/picture/passing-along-from-a-friend-jennifer-harper-bowen-my-husband-xzT0hhHsB

(28,990 posts)Lots of those kinds of things in 2024. Still waiting for reporters to obsessively interview people at gas pumps and grocery stores now like they did every day then.
And yet iDemocrats are blamed for not having just the right message or just the right candidates and gee whiz nobody has any idea what they stand for. Argh.

(4,873 posts)on my trip there this past week..... making it less of a good deal...
I have been buying quite a bit there the past few months,
depending on the item--- trying to stock up on canned goods and other non-perishables,
before my SNAP gets cut off after this month---
Have to say this makes it less likely that I will continue to buy much there...
After this month, I will limit myself to "bread, milk, eggs and cheese" as much as possible
for the following 21 months until I turn 65 and re-qualify for SNAP
niyad

(4,873 posts)so trips to any such places have been completely out of the question,
and there is no real need for such right now...
(I could have gotten it back on the road, but didn't yet,
because the requirement to do some walking seemed to
dramatically improve my physical well-being!)
My 'food stockpile' is pretty large at present---
but I worry about where I may be at the end of the year!

(1,067 posts)It'll be shelf-stable for a year. Dilute 1:1 to replace regular milk for cooking. (Don't try drinking it, it's nasty for that.)
Jack Valentino
(4,873 posts)I'm not much of a 'milk drinker', but I do like it with pancakes! which I rarely cook....
However, I do prefer it with cream soups which suggest
either milk or water to be added!
Otherwise.... I struggle to use up those half-gallons of milk before they go bad!
(Shredded cheeses seem a better investment since they can be frozen---
especially when I will use them cooked afterwards!
but a few cans of evaporated milk is also a great idea! Thanks)

(131,706 posts)And do not forget, you can used soured milk in mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, mac and cheese. . .

(131,706 posts)was 1.99 on sale, $3.50 on sale today. Half and half for my coffee went from $2.69/qt to $3.29. salmon side on sale $5.99 then, on sale 10.99 last week. reg price went from 9.99 to 14.99 for same. The extra virgin olive oil I prefer went from 14.99/liter to 20.99/liter (thank Goddess for Costco, where it is 16.99 for a two-pack! And where one can get a 3# rotisserie chicken for $5, which gives me 6-8 servings, including stock from the carcass for soup). Bonelesss/skinless chicken breast from the butcher counter went from 2.99/lb to 4.99. Cat litter from 6.99/20 lb to 8.49.
Just a few examples. And I am a fairly frugal shopper, loyalty cards, digital and paper coupons, markdowns, sales, and very little in the way of prepared, convenience, etc. And it is just my kitty and me. And we have grocery outlets as well.
It pisses me off when I hear some ridiculous figure like 2% rise. BS. DO NOT try to tell that to someone who keeps the prices in her head. I shudder to think what the bills will look like now.
FakeNoose
(41,231 posts)It always means one thing ... as soon as the sale over, like next week ... the price will be up another 20% . It has happened over and over with coffee, chocolate, and a multitude of other items. Sure I can stock up at the sale price, but they won't last forever in my pantry. Then I have to buy them again at the higher prices. Rinse and repeat.

(53,801 posts)you know what it cost me? $7.99 for one medium-sized crown. Everything is so expensive. They had a promo going on for the typical St. Patrick's Day corn beef dinner ingredients. The only part of it that was reasonably priced was the cabbage. I settled for a smaller than usual corned beef so no leftover hash. I'm not paying $30 for corned beef.

(601 posts)Every administration, Republican or Democrat, monkeys with the basket, ostensibly to more accurately represent the buying habits of the public. As a consumer and wholesale buyer, the inflationary figures this entire century havent quite aligned with my experience. I know the prices of clothing, appliances and other tech have helped by having relatively stable or even deflationary pricing, but between housing, medical, and food my monthly expenditures have risen more than the CPI index would suggest. I have no reason to believe my anecdotal experience is closer to the truth than the CPI index, but believing the numbers while grocery shopping, buying a car or house, or paying my medical insurance causes me some cognitive dissonance.
