Well, come on all of you, big strong men
Uncle Sam needs your help again
He's got himself in a terrible jam
Way over yonder in old Iran
So put down your phone, pick up a gun
Gonna have a whole lot of fun
And it's one, two, three
What are we fighting for?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn
Next stop is old Iran
And it's five, six, seven
Open up the pearly gates
Ah, ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee, we're all gonna die
Well, come on admirals let's play loose
Send our boys through the Strait of Hormuz
When they dont return you can all high five
The only good Persian is the one not alive
And you know that peace could only be won
When we've blown them all to kingdom come
And it's one, two, three
What are we fighting for?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn
Next stop is old Iran
And it's five, six, seven
Open up the pearly gates
Well, there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee, we're all gonna die
Well, come on Wall Street don't move slow
This is insider trading a-go-go
Theres money to be made no need to toil
Just act on your tip to short on oil
Just hope and pray they dont send a drone
And drop it on your luxury home
And it's one, two, three
What are we fighting for?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn
Next stop is old Iran
And it's five, six, seven
Open up the pearly gates
Well, there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee, we're all gonna die
Come on mothers who dont give a heck
To find out what happened to Mosaddegh
Come on fathers your blinders have fused
Watching all the lies on the right wing news
Be the ones who never see the con
Emanating from ole dementia Don
And it's one, two, three
What are we fighting for?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn
Next stop is old Iran
And it's five, six, seven
Open up the pearly gates
Well, there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee, we're all gonna die

(5,192 posts)We need to tear apart the MIC. It keeps us in the dark ages, heavily reliant on oil and gas to make the weapons go.

(825 posts)A seemingly never ending cycle of Samsara. The suffering we give to others while living the delusion that some lives are more important than others especially if they have darker skin and are living on gold or oil.

I challenge young(er) people. Come up with new songs.
I just bought a guitar and am up to two chords already.
Do you want to be outdone by an old Vietnam-era vet?
Are you chicken?

(7,635 posts)Draft Age is something meaningless to youth today and inconceivable to even half of the population back then. Though thousands served courageously in Vietnam, women werent issued draft cards for compulsory military service. They faced their own battles of discrimination, something men were largely unaffected.
To the point: these lyrics were what was on every teenagers mind in the 60s and early 70s. And to those old enough to remember, Johnny Carson had country Joe and the fish perform this song on the tonight show. The audience was stunned, as I remember. But it was an important point for the anti-war movement.
