Many people would call it ruling with an iron fist, keeping order in a large family. As he entered his senior years he became meaner, louder, and more defensive. It turns out that, like an injured animal, it was a cover for his physical and mental deteriorations. After his death it was discovered that not only did he have dementia, but that he had several mini-strokes. It was also discovered that he had been taken advantage of financially by unscrupulous people who knew how to appeal to his vanity and took advantage of his diminished mental abilities. His wife and family suffered during his life and after his death.

I think everyone as they get older can look back on things and realize that in hindsight we could have made decisions that would make our lives and our families lives better.
I say this based on your post where the wife now realizes that their lives could have been better had they known the consequences of living with such a horrible person. And maybe even the husband would be more open to rejecting his actions and beliefs.
