The United States is destroying itself -- Rebecca Solnit

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/apr/12/united-states-trump-destruction

The daily news can't adequately convey the administration's sabotaging of our government, economy, alliances and environment

The United States is being murdered, and it's an inside job. Every department, every branch, every bureau and function of the federal government is being fatally corrupted or altogether dismantled or disabled. All this is common knowledge, but because it dribbles out in news stories about this specific incident or department, the reports never adequately describe an administration sabotaging the functioning of the federal government and also trashing the global economy, international alliances and relationships, and the national and global environment in ways that will have downstream consequences for decades and perhaps, especially when it comes to climate, centuries.

Across the branches of government, the services that are supposed to protect us - nuclear stockpile monitoring, cybersecurity, counter-terrorism - are being undermined, understaffed or trashed. A different kind of protection that consists of public health, vaccination programs, food safety, clean air and water, social services, civil rights and the rule of law is also under attack. The federal government that serves us is being starved while the federal government that serves the Trump agenda and the oligarchy is glutting itself on taxpayer money, including the grotesque sums dumped on the Department of Homeland Security and the US military now being warped into Pete Hegseth's twisted vision of a ruthless mercenary force. Hegseth has reportedly stood in the way of promotions for more than a dozen Black and female officers.

. . .

Although there are far worse things about the utterly gratuitous and literally unjustified war on Iran, the fact that it burns through billions a day is striking, given that huge cuts are being made to environmental protection and national parks, and the forest service is being effectively sabotaged, while public lands are being offered up to fossil fuel companies and mining interests. The forest service headquarters are being moved across the country, which will probably cause many resignations, like the similar move of the Bureau of Land Management in Trump's first term. More than 50 forest service research stations are being cut, meaning more loss of irreplaceable ongoing research, data, facilities and staff.

Trump said in his droning dullard speech last week: "We can't take care of daycare. We're a big country ... We're fighting wars ... It's not possible for us to take care of daycare, Medicaid, Medicare, all these individual things." Your money, our money, our public lands, our kids. Trump even bribed the builders of offshore windfarms almost a billion dollars to stop, just because he has a personal vendetta against the clean energy systems. The US used to lead the world in scientific research, including medical research, which had led to important breakthroughs in disease treatment and health, but all that has been slashed to the bone and beyond. This is murder.

She's always worth reading. The USA news media isn't too trustworthy at this point. I don't know if our media is scared or paid off. Probably a bit of both. Canada CBC is a good source for radio news. I'm going to fire up my old Grundig Yacht Boy PE400 radio & start checking if anyone is broadcasting on the Shortwave bands. There used to be several countries that had pretty good news roundups. I realize a lot of that's on line but some nations still broadcast.

From the OP link:

It’s also evident that Trump wanted to come back into office in part to revenge himself on a country that in 2020 had rejected him, the way an ex-partner sometimes becomes a murderous stalker of the woman who dared to escape him, and specifically revenge himself on the individuals and institutions that had prosecuted him for crimes or otherwise thwarted him. Trump at some level knows he’s failing politically, cognitively and physically and wants to take it all down with him, the way that ancient rulers were buried with their slaughtered horses and servants. He’s also, as mortality breathes down his neck, trying to grab some immortality by sticking his name on buildings and park passes and currency.

But trying to understand motives is something of a hobby when the focus needs to be on consequences. We do not need to understand these criminals in order to try to contain and ultimately remove them. They will not last for ever, and we need to think about what happens when they’re gone – to talk about the kind of reconstruction the US will face for the first time since the civil war, the reconstruction a ravaged and corrupted country has to go through to return to functionality. But not to return to the way things were.

It's sort of a good news-bad news essay in reverse.

34. There's no need for a passive voice when the murderer is clear: the Far Right that calls itself "conservative"
Sun Apr 12, 2026, 02:04 PM

There's only one side here that is willing, even eager, to destroy everything in its quest for absolute power, and it's not the Democrats nor any part of the Left.

There are a number of Radical Right factions who see Trump as their ticket to grabbing all the marbles.

There has always been a faction of the Conservative Movement that had a sneaking admiration for the Bolsheviks. Not the ideology, of course, but for the ability of a small radical faction to play other factions against each other, maneuver for leverage, employ useful idiots to obfuscate their true intent, and being absolutely ruthless when they saw a chance to take total control.

These Conservo-Bolsheviks have always wanted to do away with the New Deal, get rid of the income tax, any program or policy that helps ordinary people. To them, America's "golden age" was literally that: the Gilded Age of the late 19th century, when "great men" built great industries, amassed huge fortunes, and didn't have to put up with any damn government hampering them for trifles like "grinding people under their heels." This is the leadership of the Heritage Foundation and the Federalist Society and Project 2025, people like Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh who actively worked to paint Democrats as "the enemy". They demonized Bill and Hillary Clinton so that less extreme Republicans wouldn't decide they could work with a "pro-business" Democrat who was content to work with and tweak the Reaganomics framework rather than to reverse it. If the squishier ones went that way, the Conservo-Bolsheviks could kiss any chance of more extreme measures goodbye. Thus, we've had the last 35 years, with Republicans hamstringing Democrats at every opportunity while going for broke whenever the opportunity presents itself, all while consistently putting conservative operatives on the Federal courts.

Overlapping with them are the Pluto-Bolsheviks. They share a lot of goals with the Conservo-Bolsheviks, but being the guys footing the bills, they want to make sure the outcome is tailored to their liking. This is the Kochs, the Mercers, all sorts of billionaires and multi-millionaires. This group was especially active in trying to get enough support for a new constitutional convention, where the nation's foundations could just be rewritten to their liking, locking in their own personal obsessions and making reform pretty much impossible. And by making reform impossible they would make revolution inevitable.

Next up are the Theo-Bolsheviks, an odd coalition of extremist Evangelical Protestants and right-wing Catholics. They think America has been in a moral nosedive since the 60s, and they're out to put the country "back" to a place it never really was, but the facade makes them all tingly. These are the various Trump-loving Evangelicals who rationalize his behavior as that of a modern King Cyrus, the hardliners of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Opus Dei people, all the Catholic RWers on the Supreme Court, etc. Even if the Theo-Bolsheiks came out on top, they're doomed to simply turn on each other due to the "Catholics aren't Christian" views of the Evangelicals. But for the time being they have enough in common with each other and the other factions that they can work together on "step 1: taking control."

The latest addition are the Techno-Bolsheviks: Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, J.D. Vance, and others who have adopted Curtis Yarvin as their guru. Yarvin argues that American democracy is a failed experiment that should be replaced by an accountable monarchy, similar to the governance structure of corporations. They fully believe they're the only ones who have brains. The rest of us are pretty much insect drones, and lesser beings whose expertise can be replaced with AI. In other words, they're F***ING NUTS, and they'd be harmless if they were muttering into their cups together at some dive bar, but instead they're some of the richest men in the world, and their views overlap enough with the other groups that they're all useful to each other.

These are the people trying to murder the United States. This Confederacy of Right Wing Bolsheviks see Trump as a vehicle to fast-track their with lists and overrun any obstacle to seizing total power. This is not a "both sides" matter. Only one side has the knives out.

Conservatives believe the government should provide only three basic functions. The military, the police, and the courts for business contracts. Social services and welfare should be provided by the church. Conservatives have been playing the long game while working towards this goal. For most people the government has always been a distant black box with no knowledge or understanding of how it works what it does or how it benefits us. Mostly because we never educated people about government much, mostly thanks to conservative efforts to prevent that to keep people ignorant and in the dark about what they were doing to destroy the government and the country. So the end result is that too many people supported the conservative agenda without realizing that they were screwing themselves and everyone else.
