(11,222 posts)TOO FUCKING LATE!!!
You bought it, you gonna pay for it.....FOREVER!!!!
Trump will die (hopefully SOON, but not soon enough), their SHAME is eternal.
And I vote to drop "ultra-MAGA" and revert to the normal language of the pre-2015 world - "the racist scumbag" will do nicely.

(11,261 posts)The rats are deserting the ship.
The problem is... that they are still rats.
We have to remember this whenever one of them acts as if they have become sentient.
People are always understanding and accepting when they are looking at socioeconomic ruin, starvation, and homelessness as the alternative.
It is when they are flush that they start to revert back to their old ways. They can't help it. It is in their DNA.
So, we can either keep doing this cycle, or we can remember what they are and take appropriate steps to make sure they cannot influence our politics ever again.
(We are going to stay with the first one, aren't we?

someone saying theyre done supporting Trump, but also that they didnt regret any of their three votes for him
as any Democrat would be a worse alternative.
Just damaged, brainwashed people.

(16,198 posts)Save your breath.
I think of Magats and Republicans and all of us as products that came down a factory assembly line. Magats and Republicans were assembled on either Monday, after factory employees had a long drunken party weekend, or they were assembled on a Friday after a long hard work week. The rest of us were assembled on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. That also neatly explains the percentage of defective die hard Trump supporters.
As a product they'll always malfunction no matter what they might currently say.

(165 posts)The goal should not be to weaken MAGA by convincing their faithful to abandon their position.
The more difficult, but ultimately the best route is to convince the other side to abandon theirr side and JOIN our side.
But, it's easier to call names and try to shame the weakened party.
It's why they have done it in the past and likely why weaker elements on our side will do the same thing.

(4,361 posts)taking the high road, told to try empathizing with them, we just didn't understand their concerns. And what have we gotten in return? Being mocked and demonized for being kind, decent, law abiding citizens who love this country. Well, no more. I, for one, am done. It's time to get down and dirty. It's time to insist those maga idiots who voted for t and hate America so much they love dictators around the world rather than America either start attempting to reach out to us (but prepare to be looked on with distrust and rebuffed), or move to one of those dictator loving countries they seem to admire so much.
I am polite to them if I have to interact with them at work, but off work- no.
They can go rot in whatever hell they believe in for all I care.

(11,222 posts)Not sure if the idea is to actually change things (because the last 47 years have been a straight up shitshow) or spoofing me, but I have been spit on and shat upon by GOP priorities far too often and too long to say that its OK to turn the other cheek any longer.

(22,777 posts)...that the MAGA person changed because of something a Democrat did or said.
I'm betting that was not the case.
Rather, he/she is disillusioned with current Republicans, as is the case with a whole lot of former MAGAts. That's not something we have a whole lot of control over.

You do realize, I trust, that there is a vast gulf between realizing Trump is a mess and actually changing the baseline ideas that go with voting R? Trump is an extreme version of modern Republicanism. I'm pretty sure that the number of sad MAGAs who are going to switch their votes is vanishingly small.
If this person is going to vote for Vance or Rubio or whoever runs in '28, then there's no purity test being applied. They continue to be stupid. They continue to believe the crap that FOX feeds them, just without the Trump part.
When former MAGAs start showing up on DU, let me know. That's when we'll need to debate purity tests.

(1,177 posts)Is that they sit out the next election, or become fractured and vote for some looney toons who has no chance.

(3,984 posts)I don't think the application of a "purity test" by any Democrat is going to have much effect on that.
So scolding people on this site for being less than forgiving seems to me off base.

(4,612 posts)Meet arbitrary purity demands. Or else.
dpibel
(3,984 posts)Which ones are arbitrary?
Gender equality?
Racial equality?
Respect for people who are different from me?
Do you really believe that there's some group of Democrats who are arbitrarily demanding anything?
There may be some high aspirations. But does that constitute arbitrary?
What's your line between supported and arbitrary?
Or are you using arbitrary in some sense other than "chosen, decided, etc. seemingly at random or on a whim rather than in a reasoned or methodical way"

And we need to understand that continuing to express grievance and hatred towards those who are beginning to realize they made a mistake may provide temporary satisfaction, but the ONLY practical effect it could have is to hurt our effort to defeat fascism in America.

(6,370 posts)Yes, I am enraged and purely loathe the magats, but the forces that picked up and amplified their worst natures are very powerful and effective - and are the real evil. The magats are mainly weak, greedy, ignorant, hateful and pathetic tools.
I try to tell myself that these assholes did not have the benefit of my privileged, open-minded upbringing, and that hating them is kind of like blaming people for being in poverty.
I will never like or forgive them, but I am glad when I hear that some of them are turning away from the dark, even if just to the extent of ceasing to broadcast their ugly stupidity.

(1,113 posts)If we talked politics it was rare. What she did do was give the reasons she supported trump. Which both lame54 and I could shoot holes in. She was first generation Cuban so had hypocritical views on immigration but didn't support mass deportation. She didn't believe it was actually happening.
A few of our fellow employees all belonged to the same church.
As long as you didn't talk politics or religion she was nice and a hard worker.

There's something very wrong with ANYONE who couldn't see this coming. Whether they supported him out of ignorance, stupidity, predilection for being in a cult, racism, religious zealotry, or anything else...the signs were so obvious and the warnings so clear that they have no excuse.

You can't rely on the both-sides-ism media or right-wing media to report facts. Trump is a moron but he figured out the political winds had shifted a decade ago while Democrats campaign like it's 2004.

(196 posts)To make room for the next disaster Republican bumper sticker ,soon they will all be talking about how they've got to get back to "Conservative" core value's and Fox will have them all in a fervor over their next Savior, just like with Bush and trump, I'm almost 60 and have watched them be snookered by the same old, " He's gonna straighten this Country out " nonsense since I was a child, it's a symptom of not being able to admit you were wrong to begin with, which is all of them I know

(4,191 posts)Key habits and values are essential to democracy. If we are ever to have a democracy again, we need to find a way to regain them: the willingness to give others the benefit of the doubt, to be curious about the person and be willing to look for what has shaped their lives, and to find connections where we can. Another one that used to be relatively widespread and is now on the ropes is tolerance of differences.
My husband shared a quote from a NYT opinion piece by Ezra Klein that he wrote recently:
What are some of the other necessary habits in a democracy?
