Among the Democrats voting against the resolutions were Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand

WASHINGTON – More than three dozen Democrats supported an effort by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders on Wednesday to block arms sales to Israel, signaling a growing discontent in the party with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the wars in Gaza and Iran.

The two resolutions to block U.S. sales of bulldozers and bombs to Israel were opposed by all Republicans and rejected 40-59 and 36-63. But Sanders has repeatedly forced votes on the issue to put pressure on his colleagues — both Democrats and Republicans — to oppose Netanyahu’s regime.

Similar resolutions forced by Sanders in 2024 and 2025 were also rejected, but the number of Democrats voting with the Vermont Independent has more than doubled in less than two years amid Israeli campaigns in Gaza, Iran and Lebanon and a stepped-up campaign by party activists who have increasingly seen support for Israel as a litmus test for support.

“It’s clear that Democrats are beginning to listen to the average American who is sick and tired of spending billions of dollars to support Netanyahu’s horrific wars when people in this country can’t afford housing or health care,” Sanders said after the vote.

People keep trying to boogeyman-ize it with "Netanyahu" and hysterical, unjustified hyperbole about genocide and child killing. But, the fact is that we live in an imperfect world. You have to compare Israel to its neighbors.

Go to the map with a straight edge. Put one end in Israel. Now, what is the nearest country to Israel that isn't tainted with high populations of people vehemently bigoted against gays, dismissive of other religions, highly misogynist, patriarchal, theocratic, etc.? If, as I do, you find that Israel is the most liberal, most progressive populace and nation (by far) in the vicinity, you should do the proper liberal and progressive thing. Support Israel. It couldn't be more obvious. Support the more liberal and progressive people in the region (the Israeli's) over the less liberal and progressive people in the vicinity. If you consider yourself liberal or progressive.

What am I missing?

Could be the apartheid. Or the genocide.

You can paint this rosey, sanitized picture all you want. I will continue to reject it. I will NOT accept American resources supporting genocide, period. Anywhere. Ever. It's wrong no matter how 'liberal' you want to belive a society is and I'm against it.

...undermines the meaning of the words. That, as well as blocking the core values of liberalism and progressivism at the same time (by opposing Israel and ignoring its neighbors), is not something people should do. I'm really trying to talk people out of doing that. Consistency and clarity are fundamentally important in communication. They build trust. They advance causes. Words must mean something.

It's plain. It's simple. And it's obvious.

If you want to try to defend the indefensible, feel free. But I have no interest in changing the definitions of these words to suit Israel's greed for more territory.

I stand by what I said 100% and I'm not very interested in playing semantics in order to cloud what's clear.

It is an apartheid, welfare/warfare state.

Yeah, they have healthcare coverage and free schools because the US pays for it.

Rather than fund Israeli's constant wars -- truly constant -- I'd rather have US tax dollars fund those programs at home.

If Israeli wants US bombs, let them buy them like every other country.

it isn't because Nevada has a ton of Jews (I looked it up and about 2.67% of Nevada's population is Jewish). Any Nevadans want to offer up reasons?
