A new poll of likely Democratic primary voters in Michigan shows the race for U.S. Senate remains wide open, with Abdul El-Sayed, Mallory McMorrow, and Haley Stevens effectively tied and a large share of voters still undecided.
The Data for Progress survey found Stevens at 23% and El-Sayed and McMorrow at 22%, while 33% of likely Democratic primary voters said they were undecided. The poll surveyed 515 likely Democratic primary voters in Michigan from April 2-8 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
The results suggest the Democratic primary is still very much up for grabs less than four months before the Aug. 4 election. The poll also offers a clearer look at the coalition El-Sayed is trying to build, made up of Democratic voters who are largely progressive and especially skeptical of pro-Israel political influence and military escalation in the Middle East.
That could be good news for El-Sayed, a progressive former Wayne County health director who has made opposition to Israels war in Gaza and criticism of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) a central part of his campaign.

(1,888 posts)Stevens decisive win concluded a bank-busting primary that attracted more than $4 million in pro-Israel outside spending to a face-off between two incumbents in the Detroit suburbs.

(23,747 posts)She is my current Congressperson. But I will not vote for anyone in a primary taking AIPAC money. That is a red line for me.
Haley Stevens is booed as she takes the stage at the Michigan Democratic Party Convention in Detroit. She spoke over people screaming "shame" and other comments, many about Palestine, through most of her remarks.

"Democrats, I love you, even when we disagree," Stevens said.

If you may recall, a US-Israeli joint strike this week killed over 100 Iranian schoolgirls, widely considered a war crime.

(22,001 posts)While Rodgers is very conservative, he almost looks reasonable compared to Trump.

(1 post)People here in Michigan are tired of paid-off politicians. They are tired of Republicans lies. It is refreshing to hear a growing # of people here loving Abdul El-Sayed's message.
Remember, people thought Mamdani didnt stand a chance. They clearly didn't live in New York. Same thing here.

(36,883 posts)we have the same thing in Texas with Talarico. It's going to be an uphill battle for him when the cons choose their candidate in the runoff, but he at least has a chance (religious, 8th generation Texan). Things really vary by region, or as Tip used to say "all politics is local"

(1,888 posts)Id say no. I dont think hell win the nomination either. He lost to Whitmer in the gubernatorial primaries in 2018.
Its a very purple state. It seemed more reliably blue, but like PA has drifted a bit by voting for Trump twice.
Stevens problem appears to be that she has taken money from AIPAC and was their preferred candidate when she had to compete with another democrat (Levin). It was a nasty primary back in 2022 due to redistricting.
Otherwise Id say she was the front runner earlier. I think McMorrow is the dark horse now and maybe able to consolidate progressive support, due to El sayeds missteps with Piker. If I still lived there, Id probably vote for her.

(151,430 posts)I agree. It's not really an issue for us. It's all up to MI voters, so why are we trying to decide what they will decide.
Who wins is not up to us in any way. Our political preferences have no role there in a primary race.
