I can see why Trump is, it is what he does. But why Vance? I dont see the upside and there are lots of downsides, particularly for any presidential ambitions. Note that fellow Catholic Marco Rubio seems to be keeping his mouth shut.

As to myself alongwith family and friends, the sense coming from these so called Christians is a smoke screen.
The anti-christ is here.

(11,017 posts)Which is saying something. Usually whatever this administration manages sounds about right. Trump's nuts, I expect his narcissistic madness.
But JD "Converting to Catholicism is Awesome!" Vance deciding he was going to use his newfound faith to go after the fucking Pope is one of the zaniest right turns I've ever witnessed.
Rubio's quiet because he's an actual Catholic. He's probably appalled by this. But he made his choices - and his bed. I think, starting around the shoe incident, he began realizing he's put his political career permanently to the torch for nothing. He thought he'd be in a position to influence foreign policy in an increasingly multi-polar world, starting with counterbalancing China's rise.
Instead, he's getting an Iranian clusterfuck and Pope Wars. If someone reported he goes home every night and drinks, I'd believe it.

(69,458 posts)They'll also go after Jews and Muslims and then the mainline Protestant churches.
Trump's so-called spiritual advisor is a prosperity gospel charlatan. The right wing evangelical churches follow the same path - they want a Christian Nationalist state where white men hold all the power.
The pope is a threat.

Didnt know that about his family history.

(5,090 posts)at this week's Turning Point convention on and on. The only humiliation left is for Trump to denounce him not just use him as a lap dog. I agree though, how he thinks he gets ahead trashing the pope is beyond me.

(130,800 posts)because if he wants the Big Job, MAGA will have to accept him as Trump's successor. He doesn't dare oppose or even question Trump's positions on anything, even his own fancy new religion, as to which he has to insist that the Pope is wrong because if he doesn't, he will be tacitly admitting that Trump is wrong. And then Trump will cast him under one of his many buses. Trump can't fire him but he can humiliate him and make his ascension to the Throne of Orange impossible.

(132 posts)I just read the book Opus by Gareth Gore. He spent years investigating opus dei, the catholic cult. This cult has heavily infested the upper echelons of the US government, from congress to the supreme court. Multiple billionaires and other wealthy elites donate millions to turn this country into a neoconservative branch of the catholic church. Leonard Leo, Fat Tony Scalia, Clarence Thomas, etc etc. Dark money galore is spent to influence congress and sway voters. Pope Francis started cracking down on them, and Pope Leo has also done some things as well. It seems like once you become wealthy you want to take freedoms away from others, even though that same freedom likely played a role in making you obscenely wealthy. My guess is vance is doing damage control for opus since they only like squeaky right wing popes, like The Deuce. I highly recommend reading this book.

(9,553 posts)I'm not saying he is an atheist. But being a Catholic, he should defer to the Pope on spiritual matters. That's what Catholicism is, utltimately... it is a hierarchical organization.
He is Catholic for the trappings, but he does not actually believe the Pope is Christ's Vicar. If he did believe that, he'd think he was endangering his soul.
