Republican leaders tried to pass 5-year extension of (warrantless) surveillance authority in the dead of night. Flopped.

Rep. Doris Matsui @DorisMatsui
Speaker Johnson just called us back to the floor in the middle of the night. You can’t make this up. At 2 a.m. Republicans are jamming through a backroom deal to extend FISA before their own Members have even read the bill. This would allow the government to keep searching Americans’ data without a warrant for the next five years. I’ve fought for years to close this loophole and require a warrant, just like the Fourth Amendment demands. No real reforms. No new protections. Just more unchecked surveillance power. And they’re handing it to Donald Trump and his allies for the rest of his term. I’ll be here all night fighting back and voting NO.

The bill does not enhance privacy protection.

It risks expanding the ability of the Trump administration to spy on the American people.

Unacceptable.

That’s why we just defeated the bill on the House Floor.

Jake Sherman @JakeSherman
☀️AM: JOHNSON’S FISA FLOP

JOHNSON got absolutely drubbed on the House floor last night, losing votes on his compromise FISA extension and Trump’s clean 18-month renewal.

The basic fact the House, Senate and White House may need to face soon is that the majority of the House wants warrant requirements on FISA. that may not be what the admin and intel community want. But a bipartisan majority in the House wants new restrictions and checks on FISA. And half measures clearly don’t work.
