Maduro Is Gone, and the Purge Has Begun
The successor to Venezuelas captured President Nicolás Maduro is purging the people who kept him in power.

Oligarchs close to Mr. Maduros family have been snatched from their homes. His political allies have been summarily removed from their posts. His relatives have been sidelined from business deals and barred from media appearances.
The housecleaning is being carried out by Mr. Maduros former vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, who is running the country under instructions from the Trump administration. The detentions and leadership purges have unfolded without public explanation, but often with the approval and sometimes at the urging of the White House, according to people close to Ms. Rodríguezs government.
After Mr. Maduro was dragged off in January to a New York jail, Ms. Rodríguez presented herself as a reluctant and temporary stand-in for a fallen leader, denouncing his capture as an illegal attack on her country.
But now, with Mr. Maduro gone, she is dismantling his ruling coterie and embarking on the largest redistribution of power in Venezuela in decades.
The apparent ease with which U.S. forces snatched Mr. Maduro from a heavily guarded military base has fueled suspicion that he was betrayed by people who benefited from his downfall.

Trump Threatens Venezuelas New Leader With a Fate Worse Than Maduros
The president told The Atlantic that Delcy Rodríguez needs to comply with U.S. wishesor else.

In a telephone interview this morning, President Donald Trump issued a not-so-veiled threat against the new Venezuelan leader, Delcy Rodríguez, saying that if she doesnt do whats right, she is going to pay a very big price, probably bigger than Maduro, referring to Nicolás Maduro, now residing in a New York City jail cell. Trump made clear that he would not stand for Rodríguezs defiant rejection of the armed U.S. intervention that resulted in Maduros capture.
During our call, Trump, who had just arrived at his golf club in West Palm Beach, was in evident good spirits, and reaffirmed to me that Venezuela may not be the last country subject to American intervention. We do need Greenland, absolutely, he said, describing the islanda part of Denmark, a NATO allyas surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships. And in discussing Venezuelas future, he signaled a clear shift away from his previous distaste for regime change and nation building, rejecting the concerns of many in his MAGA base. You know, rebuilding there and regime change, anything you want to call it, is better than what you have right now. Cant get any worse, he said.

(58,338 posts)Sure looked like we had assistance from the inside. There are certainly a group of powerful oligarchs in Venezuela who opposed Maduro, and opposed Chavez before him, even launching an unsuccessful coup against Chavez with US help. US officials, including senior National Security Council staff, met with Venezuelan opposition figures plotting to remove Chavez in the months leading up to April 2002 coup attempt.
They appear to now be resurgent.
