MAGA Erupts After 'Disgusting' Blow to Trump

MAGA went into meltdown after voters in Virginia turned against Donald Trump in a critical referendum that could sway the result of the midterm elections.

Virginians approved a Democratic plan to allow them to redraw the state congressional map for the remainder of the decade. Subject to a state Supreme Court hearing later this week, the plan could give the party as many as four extra seats in the House come November.

The result means that Trump’s calls for redistricting in Republican-led states—which MAGA raced to back at the time—are now backfiring on the president as Democratic states rush to follow suit.

After 97 percent of the votes were counted, 51.5 percent voted yes to redistricting, while 48.5 percent voted no.
(snip)

Speaker Mike Johnson called the results “egregious”, claiming 46-percent of Virginia voters backed Trump. “That is why Democrats relied on rigging the ballot question in order to win. We fought this effort with money, manpower, and in the courts - and those fights will continue.”

Side Note: interesting to see our Denver area Dem U.S. Rep, suddenly, out of nowhere already running spots for her re-election.
Obviously, having just coasted along merrily, all these years, with so many of her colleagues, I think she is starting to get worried about being primaried........We also have two such Dem U.S. Senators "awakening" to the fact that we all are getting really upset at the "DO NOTHING"..Dem Politicians.........I cannot say that either of these individuals have represented us in America they way they should have been........along with about 200+ other dem U.S. Senators and members of the house......

Even if Trump got 46 percent of the vote in 2024, that is LESS than 50 percent, do why would Democrats have to rig the election to win?

In the first place, there is ample proof in polling and special elections that Trump is very likely less popular than he was in 2024 when he was defeated by 8 percent.

Second, he gives no explanation of how it was rigged. In fact, as an out of stater following it mostly through posts here, it was the Republicans using old comments by the governor and Obama to imply they supported a NO vote, when they favored yes.

By the way, it was only in yesterday's coverage that I heard former AG Holder explain that this map was to counter the Republican gerrymandering AND he and top Democrats favored new maps after the next census be done by non partisan teams. For me, this threaded the needle between being against gerrymandering, but realizing that Republican led states doing it means we have to respond in kind.

Having just one or two of 12 Congressional districts drawn to favor Democrats is unfair (less than 10%). Which is true, as supporters of the measure admitted. However, the GOP has been doing this for a long time, including egregiously in Wisconsin, but also, yes, the Texas redistricting also draw maps in wild disproportion to overall votes. So Johnson wants to be able to do this in Texas, but not in Virginia. He can eat shit.

I've seen several articles in the last few months about the Texas power grab, an imposed map as compared to voter choice in VA, and most of them mention that it was based on a belief that they would have the same amount of Latino support as they had Nov. 2024. This is no longer true according to current polling. Their supposition that nothing has changed may cause them to lose 5 more seats. (so sad)

These idiots are out there whining about “liberal hypocrisy”. I don’t think they have any idea what the word even means.

Had Texas not approached mid decade redistricting, neither California or Virginia would have followed through on this. Hell, both state referendums aren’t enacting these permanently.

Many democratic states have for years tried to make the process fairer, by giving power to independent commissions. Not a single republican state has done the same.

I’m not saying democratic states don’t gerrymander, but not to the extent republicans have weaponized the process.

Justice matters.

"I’m not saying democratic states don’t gerrymander, but not to the extent republicans have weaponized the process."

If Illinois is any example, blue states do gerrymander. Democrats don't go out of their way to weaponize the process, but they do use it to their advantage. Our current congressional district maps are downright embarrassing; my district looks like a 50 mile long snake with an oversized head at each end!

I have mixed feelings about it. It's hard to object to something that gives Dems an advantage, but I'm not going to brag about it, either. The best thing I can say is, Republicans aren't giving us much of a choice. They're going to play dirty no matter what, and we can't just roll over and play dead. This is one area where going high when they go low is NOT a viable option.

I think there should be a constitutional amendment prohibiting political gerrymandering.

But given the games R's play, we have to work within that system. It would be stupid to let them gerrymander a purple state into the deep red category and not react in kind.

areas.

You are also right to point out that none of these referendums are even permanent. In the not-too-distant future, they’re likely going to need to be extended—since the GOP is continuing down this road with or without Trump—but that’s a whole other can of worms.

Not to mention the fact that Republican-controlled states didn’t even LET people vote on this shit. They just forced it through. Almost like they’re fucking fascist or something.

You’d think people would start to get a damn clue.

Republicans pulled out all the stops to deceive Virginia voters in their promotional materials about the referendum. We got several mailers a day declaring that Obama and Spanberger want you to vote NO. It was relentless, so much so that I was really concerned that the lies would work. Fortunately, voters saw through the bullsh*t and voted YES.

I think most Virginia voters were perfectly happy with their current district assignments. But the blatant cheating in red states could not go unaddressed. Yes, the new districts are completely disproportionate, but that’s what happens when the other side decides to fight back hard.
