Hey, maybe that's a good thing. Put a stake through the heart of fossil fuels.

(26,333 posts)Perhaps others will be impacted, and you're right, maybe it is time to drive a stake through this boogie man of oil imports/oil trade, that it seems like every time tRUMP has a fit, he imposes a blockade thinking that it would fix things.

(16,770 posts)Here is a list of the key problems caused by the closure:
Global Energy Crisis: The blockade has created the largest disruption to the world oil market in history, significantly reducing the supply of oil and natural gas.
Massive Price Spikes: Oil prices have soared, with Brent crude hitting over US$100 per barrel in March 2026, causing a surge in global inflation.
Supply Chain Disruptions: Over 400 tankers, including LPG and LNG vessels, were trapped in the region or forced to avoid the strait, halting international shipments.
Agricultural and Industrial Impact: 46% of global urea trade (fertilizer) and significant amounts of sulfur and methanol are blocked, leading to a 30-50% rise in fertilizer prices and threatening food security.
Shipping and Logistics Breakdown: Insurance costs have plummeted while risks have risen, leading to widespread shipping company hesitancy even when safe passage is theoretically offered.
Regional Economic Vulnerability: Developing economies are hardest hit due to limited ability to manage rapid price hikes in fuel and goods.
Threat to Global Transport: Almost 90% of oil and gas for Asias manufacturing hub passes through here, threatening to paralyze manufacturing sectors

(2,462 posts)Even if they did, it wouldn't be safe to deploy them in the Straits because of anti aircraft weapons, and, wait for it, Iranian mines. When needed, the Navy relies on aircraft to drop mines. Also a bad idea; anti aircraft weapons. Some submarines have the capability of laying mines. Another bad idea - Iranian mines. Let's be honest here. The Iranians own the Straits and the Persian Gulf and there is nothing we can do about it.
You are right about one thing. We are on the outside waiting for Trump to scrape his act together, admit defeat, and cut a deal with Iran.

What an absolute boon for our enemies. Of course Iran can continue on in strength, because our enemies are glad they finally found an American president stupid enough to bomb them so they can retaliate by proxy with Iran.
