Elephants Trample Millionaire in Big Game Hunt Gone Wrong
https://www.thedailybeast.com/elephants-trample-millionaire-in-big-game-hunt-gone-wrong/
A millionaire big game hunter has been trampled to death by a herd of elephants.
Vineyard tycoon Ernie Dosio, 75, was out shooting yellow-backed duiker, a species of antelope, in Gabon when he and his guide surprised five female elephants with a calf in the Lope-Okanda rainforest last Friday.
Dosio, from Lodi, California, had previously amassed a huge haul of trophies, from elephants to lions, and was a well-known figure at the Sacramento Safari Club.
Safari company Collect Africa confirmed that its client had been killed, according to The Daily Mail, and said that its professional hunter, who was guiding Dosio, was left severely injured in the attack.

(9,076 posts)One of my fav documentaries of elephants was about a woman conservationist who worked to protect them. She helped a young female thru something, I don't recall details on that. The women was then out of country for years. When she returned, she caught up with the herd/family group she had studied and helped.
She wondered if they would remember her.
The matriarch was leery at first until she caught scent. Then she signaled this human was safe and others got nearer, approaching cautiously and sniffing. One young adult female got a good look and whiff, then became excited, approaching much closer to be sure the woman was who she thought she was. Then the young adult stepped back into the herd, and started guiding a baby towards the woman. Yep, she not only remembered the friend who had helped her years before, she brought her young calf to meet 'the woman who saved momma'.
Yep, they remember and they communicate among their family groups.
So, maybe the herd that stomped the game hunter remembered his past transgressions and did something about dealing justice.
He had it coming.

(7,865 posts)Of the world pecking order. Studies have shown dolphins are as intelligent... or moreso than humans (especially maga!)
Many species mate for life and actually stay monogamous. Can't say that for a good many people.
Elephants not only have long memories but will bear great sacrifice to help out family members *and* friends.
Primates... other than one group I know of, primates actually are what we should aspire to in our social lives... caring, loving, family oriented, helpful to both family and group members, but also to p"strangers".
That one group I mentioned... was actually two groups who had schismed and ended violently making war on each othet. Fascinating from an ecological and psychological viewpoint... especially when doing a contrast and compare with humans.
Personally I think the less contact with humans, the better off for the animals. But despite how so many have mistreated them, many will still come to our aid when we need help. Since they don't expect gain from the interaction, I view it as the altruism that humans should have already evolved to... sigh
So many times, I'd much rather work and associate with animals over people. IMO, human DEI is copied from the best of the animal species. JMO, YMMV.

Many years ago I had a co worker who came from Cambodia. Every now and then he would impart some wisdom my way.
Things like "If you in jungle, don't make tiger mad" Damn good advice I must say.
One of his others was "If you in jungle and see elephants making love, make sure they don't see you. If they see you are watching them do that, they will chase you down, stomp you and kill you"

(17,472 posts)As an animal rights supporter I am weirdly less irked by big game hunters than some as awful as they are as I hate Tyson Chicken so much more re: scale.
So I do appreciate your point in a roundabout way tavernier.
The sheer scale of animal abuse out there is breathtaking and I do rank and prioritize things automatically, something which I now realize is what always confused me about societys collective zeitgeist.

What he was hunting was a rare antelope.
That screams endangered to me.
As far as his charity work, that was hosting dinners at his trophy room for his rich friends. Nowhere in the article did they say where the money raised went. All it stated was it went to those "in need".
The best part of the article was that it noted another millionaire big game hunter met the same fate and was gored by a buffalo last year.
Hopefully they both spend eternity being the hunted.

(740 posts)In general, I don't approve of hunting. I grew up in a hunting culture, so I have taken a lot of Crap about this over the years.
It is an expensive "sport" and I don't care for the taste of game, and yes, I know what wild duck, rabbit, venison, etc, taste like. Not impressed. But hunting for "sport" is a terrible thing. It just cannot be justified
I have heard this "culling the herd" bullshit all my life. If we had not killed off all the predators it would not be necessary, and yes, there are times it is necessary, but in general, it is just an excuse to kill something, that is not bothering you at all. I love the out doors, and have spent a significant amount of time camping, hiking, and canoeing.
I was taught to be quite competent with firearms, but never felt the urge to kill anything out there.
Elephants are majestic creatures and should be left alone.

(133,300 posts)struck me. He paid $55,000 for the "privilege" of stalking a rare antelope, while hevwas carrying a high-powered rifle. yeah, just "observing". At least one story claims that the elephants were so well hidden that he and his ph (professsional hunter) never saw them. Multiple pictures of him with his "trophies". A picture of a "trophy room" in his house filled with both trophy heads and complete bodies. But, according to his huntwasher, each and every one of them was a cull, or a carcass he just happened upon.
I am glad they did not dignify him with "winemaker", which he was not, but the far more accurate "vineyard tycoon". Big Ag.

(130,909 posts)Rangers at Kruger National Park and other searchers found only a human skull and a pair of pants, the park said in a statement on Friday.
The mans accomplices told his relatives that they had been in the park to poach rhinos on Tuesday night when he was killed by an elephant, local officials said.
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/07/world/africa/south-africa-poacher-rhino-lions.html
And:
CAPE TOWN In the cold hours before dawn this week on a South African game reserve, a dog began barking. It was a special breed of Belgian sheepdog, and its job was to listen for poachers.
The dogs handler, trained to guard rhinoceroses, could hear a pride of lions in the distance. He decided it was a false alarm. But that Monday evening, rangers came across the remains of men suspected of being poachers.
One of our guys found what he thought was a soccer ball, Nick Fox, the owner of the private game reserve in Eastern Cape Province, said on Friday. It turned out to be a skull.
The next morning, rangers and police officers said that as many as three men suspected of being rhino poachers had been killed by lions in an area densely packed with thorn bushes.

(2,158 posts)It says he was hunting a Yellow-Backed Duiker. In my early life I worked at a zoo and with several kinds of duikers. I can't believe there is ANY way that this is not considered an endangered animal. It blows my mind to think that it's allowed to kill one (or any of the duikers) for a trophy. I think all of the species are threatened due to habitat loss and the bushmeat trade.
I'm apparently incapable of getting a photo link of one to work here, but the Yellow Backs are vaguely deer shaped with a short neck, less than 3 feet tall at the back. They don't have big impressive antlers or horns. While I appreciated them, I don't see them as being a majestic looking mount on a wall.
Re the elephants intelligence and memory--for anyone interested in such things, check out the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and what they do for/with elephants. Among other things they save orphaned elephants and frequently post short videos of their 'graduates' that have gone back to the wild. Then, when they have their own babies will come back to the compound where they were raised. As if to showoff their babies to their former caregivers. Lots of amazing and heartwarming stories.
https://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/social-feed
Glad that the elephants scored one over the hunter.
