Given that the US rail system can't replace trucks to deliver stuff, there is really no viable alternative if they want to continue selling their product. Any competing trucking companies are facing the same pricing.

Truckers should be Democrats, but for the last 30 years they mostly have been listening to AM Hate radio, and now the multitude of rightwing satellite channels. Every truckstop has Fox "news" on the TV in the lounges.

So now they are just one of the many blocs which the right has fooled into compliance.

All one has to do to fool someone is to pierce their underlying bigotry, claim the ones they hate are the cause of their misery and problems, present a simplistic solution to complex problems that seems logical and workable at the surface, and then stoke patriotism behind it.

Worked in Nazi Germany and the right wing has perfected that.
