A shocking moment just unfolded on Canadian television as Elissa Slotkin traveled to Canada and openly urged Canadians not to give up on the United States after Donald Trumps aggressive tariffs severely damaged Canada-U.S. relations.
In a stunning interview following her meeting with Mark Carney, Slotkin admitted that American industries are feeling it deeply as Trumps tariff strategy backfires against the United States economy. She also warned Canadians not to let this current conflict define the next 30 years of the Canada-U.S. relationship and even stated that there is a future after this president a remarkable admission about the damage Trump has caused to Americas closest alliance.
In this video, we break down:
How Trumps tariffs are hurting the U.S. economy
Why Michigans auto industry is under severe pressure
The growing panic inside Washington
Canadas strategy to diversify away from the United States
Why American politicians now sound apologetic toward Canada
The collapse of trust between both countries

(56,005 posts)the level of trust we had will never return to what it once was, imo. "Once burned, twice shy". The reduction in relying on the US to be our major customer will continue as will the work toward greater diversification. Visitations by Canadians to the US will come back to some extent once the republicans and trump are gone but it, too, will never return to what it once was.
I watched Senator Slotkin's interview on CBC and she was very impressive, I quite like her.

(60,404 posts)I talked to her several times during her campaign, was in DC for her swearing in party . She is smart and realistic. Michigan is lucky to have her.
A friend of mine used to be Canadas ambassador to the USA. He no longer speaks for their government, of course, but Id say they are alarmed that we have sunk this low, but have by no means given up on us.
The relationship between our two countries has been severely damaged but is not beyond repair to some extent, how much is an open question, imo.

(2,666 posts)See the problem that Dems are going to run into when they get back into power is that because the American people elected Trump a 2nd time a lot of these alliances are going to be very nervous about entering back into anything, even with a Dem president, because there is no trust that another Trump may just come along in a few years and tear up anything that gets done. I think that most in the world just assumed that Trump was a one off protest vote in 2016, but when he was re elected again its clear that there is enough voters in the country that this may be the new norm.
