Prince Harry has warned of Britains deeply troubling rise in anti-Semitism following a string of antisemitic attacks directed against the countrys Jewish community.
In an op-ed published Thursday by British left-wing magazine The New Statesman, Harry outlined his fears for what he called a divided kingdom and urged people to separate their protests against the Israeli government from prejudice towards Jewish people.
He did not explicitly name Israel in the piece. Instead, he referred to states whose actions raise serious questions under international humanitarian law and acknowledged images from Gaza, Lebanon and the wider region of devastated communities and entire neighbourhoods levelled and reduced to rubble have shaken people to their core.
Israels war in Gaza, launched after Hamas deadly terrorist attack in October 2023, has prompted worldwide protests and an independent United Nations inquiry concluded last September that the country had committed genocide against Palestinians in the enclave.

(29,685 posts)I don't think he should have chosen that as his costume, but if I wore a hooker costume to a masquerade, it wouldn't mean that I was a prostitute. A lot of people dress as the Devil for Halloween. And so on.

His military service to his country was in a hostile combat zone, where there was a literal price on his head. He has made his apologies many times over.

(157 posts)has the monarchy recently had on the rest of the government? Of course, there are other considerations. Indeed, what would the toxic tabloid press and the gaggles of "royal experts", "royal insiders", "royal observers" and other gossip mongers do without them?

(157 posts)are the surviving vestiges of a feudal system that separated humans into lords and serfs, a demeaning system that promoted vast differences in wealth and social status that have persisted to this day. The myth of "royal blood" was never and is still not a harmless concept. The fact that some monarchies no longer have actual power may show some progress toward true equality of human rights, but it is certainly not a reason to keep them around. We, as a species, are far better off without them. The persistent curse of alpha male leadership, under which we Americans presently suffer, has been in large part kept alive by monarchies over the centuries.

(157 posts)as are the Tech Bros who accompanied him to China. England fostered the Divine Right of Kings, contributing to the preservation of the ancient belief that rulers were gods or chosen by them. Many in this country have been surprised at the evangelicals' comparisons of Trump to Jesus. No surprise to me at all. And see how Trump has been playing into it himself...

This is just looking for something to feel outraged over when it's actually just meaningless.

(157 posts)You may have heard of Calvinism. One of its tenets (the idea that economic success is a visible sign of God's grace) still lives and flourishes in today's religious world. If you follow history, you can follow the thread that connects today's "noble rich" with the kings, queens, lords and ladies of the past. It has everything to do with it.

(157 posts)The connection between the old monarchies and the new ones is real. When humans no longer need them for any reason, given the negativity associated with their histories, then we will have turned a corner as a species. Today's UK royals now are in an ideal (for them) situation...obscenely wealthy with few responsibilities beyond ribbon-cutting and some do-gooding.

(9,223 posts)Frankly, I would guess more than a few British people would scoff at him using the title and trying to meddle in policies all the sudden. Saw recently that he wants security protection like the royals who do their assigned 'duties'. Maybe it's rougher out there among common people? He and the wife want back in?
I like Harry, and am glad he got the counseling he needed, did the work to get over some traumas, but he seems to be having second thoughts about his decision to live his life his way, outside of the privileged umbrella of monarchy.

(56,210 posts)Yup. Bring up anti-Semitism...shift to everything else but, especially if you can move the conversation to Israel or Islamophobia. Can you image every time there was a discussion about an anti-Black racist attack and posters decried, "But what about....?!" Of course, it does happen on occasion.
At least we know Harry isn't taking money from AIPAC.
