Remember when a flawed Democrat won

Last edited Wed Jun 10, 2026, 06:37 AM - Edit history (1)

2027 Attorney General race in Virginia. Jay Jones was blasted by the media, every Republican and many national Democrats. It seems Mr. Jones had made threatening texts against a fellow lawmaker and his family.

I was following the election closely and was frightened that Jones' actions could cost the Governor's election for the Dems. I thought Jones was cooked. He was running against a pretty popular Republican incumbent. In the end, being a Republican in a purple state while Trump is President was worse than anything Jones did. The final count: Jay Jones won by over 6 and a half points. That was when Trump's approval numbers were 8 points higher, before $4.50 a gallon gasoline and before a prolonged, unpopular war Trump started in Iran

Don't write Platner off. His flaws may be disturbing, but they're not criminal. And he's against Trump and a Trump enabler, Susan Collins.

I live in ME and that is my opinion. I heard no one, absolutely no one, discussing Platner's "scandals" in the run up to the primary.

5. I think so too. He has a really great and well-targeted message against Collins.

For his flaws and lack of experience, he's really tapped into a vein and has great speaking skills.

10. His speech was the most populous speech I have heard

in a long time.

One interesting thing that I heard in comments elicited from Mainers was an echo of his comment that Collins lied when she said she would protect Roe v. Wade. There is a critical difference between she wrongly trusted Kavanaugh on Roe v Wade and that she lied.

I wonder if accusing her of lying and betraying their interest will give many previous Collins voters the reason for rejecting a long time Senator.

If Republicans are attacking him over his Democratic policies in office, that's a win.

Too many Dems fail to understand we are in a fight for the future of Democracy. Nothing else should matter. High road? Go bake f’en cookies.

9. I think comparing the Jay Jones race to this one is a bit of an apples-to-oranges situation.

I think comparing the Jay Jones race to this one is a bit of an apples-to-oranges situation. I appreciate your underlying hope and optimism... but it's important to note that Attorney General and Senate races function differently, and Virginia’s electorate doesn't necessarily behave like Maine’s.

While the Jones win was certainly a testament to voters prioritizing party over candidate flaws in that specific cycle, it is not a guarantee that voters elsewhere will reach the same conclusion. The environment, the office, and the specific nature of the controversies are just too different to draw a straight line. I share the hope that voters will be forgiving, but I think it is an open question whether the electorate will view these two situations through the same lens.

It is more important to have an anti-Trump Democrat in the Senate, than in the AG's office. They confirm judges as well as need to advise and consent on policy. Having the majority in the Senate gives the party chairs of every committee and subpoena power,

As far as the similarities of the states, Harris won both by similar margins. Of course, both contests are different, but I can see a bluer atmosphere in 2026 than in 2025.
