and ability to say that which makes the listener believe him to be "moderate," on issues (when he clearly is not) comes through.
Ted Bundy comes to mind because I might well have misread him too had I been old enough to have encountered him and to be one of his victims decades ago. I remember attending a professional conference at the Wildwood Inn in Snowmass-Aspen years ago--decades after Bundy's time-- and meeting the lead maintenance person for the facility when I needed additional power cords for my presentation. He asked me to meet him in his office and lo and beyond, there on his desk was a photo of Bundy. (Bundy abducted one of his victims from that resort). He mentioned keeping it there to remind himself that people are not always what they "seem."
I've remembered his comments for years-- while I think I have reasonable instincts about the people I meet. Still, Roberts has long been interpreted by press and public alike, as the "reasonable" one and not as a calculating ideologue. Admittedly, I've been fooled as well at times... Still, remember "Ted Bundy" figures exist in life and in politics... Roberts may not deserve to be compared to a serial killer, but he is not all that he seems.
