Fruit dating back 250 years was found at George Washington's Mount Vernon during an archeological study a few years ago, says historian @lmchervinsky
.

She told @JudyWoodruff
that the team found 35 intact glass bottles of fruit, mostly cherries. "They were bottled using the recipe by an enslaved woman named Doll, and George was quite specific that it was to be that recipe," Chervinsky said.

The jars were then put in a covered pit. "It was a way to do refrigeration at the time," she said.

Amazingly, Chervinsky added, "the fruit is still food-grade quality."

Chervinsky spoke to Woodruff for PBS News' podcast, "In Pursuit of Happiness," about Washington's achievements, contradictions and enduring influence on the American presidency.
