Collins should have been voted out years ago. That she plays lip-service to bipartisanship but only votes with Democrats when there are enough Republicans to pass whatever garbage they're pushing has been glaringly obvious.

But sometimes, one has to deal with other kinds of folks. And figure out what it might take to win them over. Especially those who know (or have a pretty good idea) who the voters are and what a majority of them wants.

33. For example, here is Shah's position on ICE

I just picked Shah at random to see if it was vague doubletalk or real plans. Here is an AI summary. If this s accurate, it sounds like pretty solid, tanglble, concrete thinking to me. I'm not backing him, just exploring the amplitude of his passion.
=======
Agency Reform & Dissolution: Shah has stated that in its current form, ICE "cannot continue to exist". Following a fatal July 2026 ICE shooting in Biddeford, Maine, he demanded immediate agency reforms or a complete dissolution/transfer of its duties. He has even expressed willingness to vote to shut down the government to enforce ICE reforms.

State-Level Crackdown on Abuse: At the state level, Shah proposes legislation to explicitly require all law enforcement officers operating in Maine to wear ID badges and active body cameras while banning the use of masks.

Ending State Cooperation: His plan pushes to strengthen Maine’s limited-cooperation law so that state assets and resources cannot be utilized as a "force multiplier" for federal immigration activities.

Accountability Metrics: He supports legislation that would make it easier for law enforcement to be held civilly liable in Maine courts when they violate rules, while also implementing strict minimum training and first-aid mandates.

34. Here is Bellows' position on ICE
Mon Jul 13, 2026, 10:16 PM
7 hrs ago
Covert License Plates Denial: Bellows stopped issuing confidential/undercover license plates to federal officers ahead of a federal immigration surge in Maine. She was backed by the Maine Attorney General, triggering an ongoing standoff and a threatened lawsuit from the U.S. Justice Department. She justified the refusal by stating that government agencies should identify themselves while arresting people on the streets.

Polling Place Deployments: In March, Bellows led a coalition of nine states to demand written assurances from the Department of Homeland Security that ICE agents would not be deployed to polling locations.

Reaction to ICE Fatalities: Following a fatal shooting by an ICE agent during an enforcement operation in Biddeford, Maine, Bellows criticized the incident, publicly stating, "It's time to get ICE off our streets,".

Target of Backlash: Her firm stance against the agency has made her a prime target for backlash, resulting in online doxing, harassment, and swatting incidents at her home.

The first 2 are action-oriented, although possibly a bit narrower than the proposals Shah makes, but it is more than just talk. That's good.

35. And here's Jackson's position on ICE
Mon Jul 13, 2026, 10:21 PM

Abolishing the Agency: Jackson has campaigned on the platform that ICE should be dismantled and rebuilt into a new way that "respects the rule of law" and targets only actual threats.

Accountability: Following an ICE-involved shooting in Biddeford, Maine, Jackson joined protesters in Mechanics Park, demanding accountability, calling ICE agents "untrained and reckless," and insisting that they do not receive a "free pass" just because they claim to be law enforcement.

State-Level Action: During his campaign for governor (prior to his Senate bid), Jackson published an ICE action plan that proposed creating executive orders to establish "safe zones" in Maine and calling on the Maine State Police if ICE attempts operations there.

=====
And again, he does talk some specifics. I give all three candidates credit for that. Of the three, Shah's positions sound the firmest, and most likely to really motivate the kind of action we need, but I am pleasantly surprised by all three.

I was going to start a thread about what I saw on Rachel Maddow but basically I wanted to say I'm not sure when Maine will have a Democratic nominee but I will hope the next one works to reign Trump in instead of the ways Susan Collins failed and capitulated to Trump on key votes. I would also like to see the next nominee address problems like this and work on solutions to solving them.

I do support abolishing ICE and that is actually a mainstream position according to polling. Glad to see here that Jackson supports it.

I will also do my K&R for this thread here.

apparently she is trying to stop the OMB from attaching rules to research grants that will allow political hacks to determine what science is funded and what is done with the funding. I am attaching a link that I think will work. Susan Collins is mentioned at the end. I hope that she is more than just 'concerned'' but can do something, because this is going to happen in three days.
