Smoke from Canadian wildfires

has blanketed Wisconsin and most of the day showed the sun as just a dim red ball. For those DU members who are too young to have lived through the '60's smog in urban America you get kind of a feeling for what nearly every day was like in L.A., Chicago etc. The fetid stench of air pollution and miserable effects on life were a constant pain.

I remember driving into big cities and as you got to where you could see the skyline you saw the brown haze sitting like a muffin top over the city. As you got closer if you had your windows down the awful stench would roll in and the haze was obvious at ground level.

The GQP/MAGA lunatics would love to completely gut the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act. This is the "good old days" they want to go back to along with a society with morals, norms, law and justice from the Salem Witch Trial days. Here is a shot of Milwaukee and a some other shots of the "good old days". You know Roberts and Alito idolize the days of "yore".

While the Canadian wildfire smoke will eventually go away the memories of the way the air and water were in the "good old days" won't.

It was unbelievable. I remember my Grandma washing her porches twice a day. Dad would come home from working in the mill with 1/8” of dust on the car. Why we all don’t have lung cancer is amazing.

Ash on your car if you parked it outside overnight….. our county courthouse was made out of sandstone and it was black for many years … then one day it got sandblasted and everyone was so amazed to see its real color, a nice tan color.

city. It looks like a castle. Built with sandstone it turned black over the years. Did not look like the same building after it was sand blasted!

NOAA provides satellite images in many formats.
Free of charge or paywall or advertising. We paid for this in our taxes. NOAA provides this material to private companies who put lipstick on it and sell it back to us, but it's funded by the people for the people.

I favor clicking on the animated gif in the first block of links. This works best in daylight, where the smoke looks brown. It doesn't show well at night. We should lobby for NOAA to publish a day/night smoke view. There are some views which detect the smoke at night, but they include a lot of other noise.

Stuff like this doesn’t normally bother me but this is bad. Way worse than last time.

My partner is obsessed with those fancy air purifiers. They almost never run unless we are cooking inside. All three are running nonstop.

for just an hour or so I started getting a headache the way I used to back in the "old smog" days.
