Nixon was an evil arsehole but he had nothing on the orange shitgibbon. The unpredictable crazy brings it to a whole nuther level. 😬

(27,128 posts)because this is different in many ways.
Nixon did try to interfere in the 1972 election via the Watergate break-in. But it was not a violent, insurrectionist interference like J6.
He and Hoover did intervene in protests with Cointelpro to stir up scuffles and violence in order to discredit protesters. The National Guard presence at Kent State, resulting in the killings and wounding of students, were the result of the Ohio governor's orders. They were not a national movement under presidential orders like Trump and ICE. There was also shooting of Black students on a southern campus who protested the sane escalation that Kent students protested, but, like Kent it came from local not national orders.
There were no concentration camps for immigrants under Nixon.
Anti war protests were mostly a youth movement. Civil rights protests involved people of all ages. Hoover's FBI was involved in discrediting both movements, but there was not a national goon squad with a billion dollar budget and license to shoot down civilians, hide under masks without IDs, break into homes, break car windows and drag people out of them, shoot blindly into people's homes. There was local violence under orders of state governors and local PDs (Ohio, Alabama, Chicago in 1968), but no national goon squads.
In some regions, the violence was worse than today, e.g. Civil rights murders, dogs and fire hoses to maintain segregation and deny voting rights, bombings, etc. It was not nationally organized and carried out by national killing squads. .But there were no concentration camps.
Despite all his faults, Nixon actually did some real governing. He was not all ego glorification. He did not put his face and name everywhere or destroy monuments and the WH.
Both were/are authoritaroan con men. But Trump is far worse.
