Dealing with trolls will make young women sympathetic to Hillary Clinton (from The Guardian)

A highly relevant article:

When I visit college campuses, young women always ask me how I deal with negativity online – and how they can. How can I write and participate on social media when it inevitably results in ad hominem attacks and vitriol? The students I speak to increasingly feel like they have to consider, before choosing a career path or posting an opinion in a public forum, whether they can cope with violently sexist responses and a never-ending barrage of misogynistic bullshit.

If anyone knows the answer to their questions, it’s Hillary Clinton. Her career has long epitomized how misogyny can haunts female politicians: the Hillary “nutcracker”, the pokes about her headbands, her hair, her pantsuits, her voice. She has too often been the target of insults based on men’s fear about powerful women – an unenviable position that few can understand.

At least, we couldn’t understand it in 2008. But thanks to the explosion of social media, everyone is a public figure, at least in a micro sense: we all have friends, followers, fans and drive-by haters. And a new generation of young female voters who have grown up being targets of digital abuse may empathize with the sexism that was and will be directed at Clinton.

snip:
According to research from Pew, 65% of young internet users have been harassed online. Young women, in particular, were more likely to experience harassment on social media: 26% of young women polled said they had been stalked online and 25% were sexually harassed online. A 2006 study from the University of Maryland showed that internet users with female-sounding usernames were 25 times more likely to receive sexually explicit and threatening messages. (And that’s not even taking into account revenge porn or Gamergate.)

snip:
Clearly there is more to winning over young female voters than commiserating over sexist awfulness and advice on overcoming misogyny. But I’m betting there’s a deep-seated desire in a lot of young women to see sexist tormentors get theirs. Maybe they can’t stop the guy who tweets fat jokes at them, and maybe they’re too embarrassed to report the anonymous sexual threats in their Facebook messages. But what they can do is give a big “fuck you” to every get-back-in-the-kitchen YouTube bottom-dweller or cable news host jerk who mocks Clinton’s appearance by making their distaste known at the voting booth.

The more little tools on the internet try, with lies, half-truths, bullshit invective and false assertions, to shit on Clinton, the more I support her. The snide, dismissive and patently unfair remarks which have a goal to cut into her support instead have the opposite effect.

No one likes a nasty-ass, mean and cowardly bully--not just young female voters!

Many will also go into great detail as to how society gives women all of the power. When pressed that notion is based on the fact that women have the right to say, "No".

(Which is something MGTOWs used to hear a LOT before they gave up asking and called themselves MGTOWs.)

where the thesis is "here's what I think this group thinks, and no I didn't ask." It's lazy at best.

It's also a backbone of feminist academic work that those with a platform should amplify that voices of less powerful people rather than speaking for them, so it's really odd that Valenti is assuming what young women voters think rather than asking and then quoting them.

I'd argue that assumptions about young women's votes that don't involve their opinions about policy matters sell them short and contribute to sexist narratives that assume young women are shallow.

90% of opinion pieces in papers are absolute junk. You do occasionally get the Paul Krugmans and Robert Reichs of the world, though.

I just can't bring myself to be all attacky like I would like to be. I am not a Hillary fan, but sure enough when conservatives or otherwise petty people attack it makes me more sympathetic to her and I do tend to be a defender of people I sympathize with.

I'm voting Democrat, period.

Then I realized the constant attacks are working me, and I'm a middle aged woman. I've been paying closer attention to her actual record. I take every single criticism of the Senator with a grain of salt until I searched it myself. I'm eyerolling at hysterical OPs that have little substance in light of her actual record. I'm facing Cintons flaws head on and weighing them against her positive attributes. And I like what I'm seeing.

going to vote Democratic, period --

and having the same reaction to the attacks on Hllary.

The more petty or unfair attacks I see, the more I'm moved to defend her, the more I'm beginning to support her.

By the time she's in the general, I'll be there 100% .

If you want to mobilize anyone who has been discriminated against or marginalized due to race, gender or one of several other classes, demonstrate that you are marginalizing another member of that class right in front of them or publicly on TV/ in Media.

I voted for her in the 2008 primary. Obama already had is wrapped up by then and I really wanted to vote for a woman for POTUS, so I did. And I hope to again.

and disgust to vote in another corporatist. Maybe misogynists will motivate more women to support Hillary, but that's not really a good sign of the health of our democracy when you think about it.
