Father arrested after son brought gun to elementary school and accidentally shot himself

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The father of an Alabama elementary school student who brought a gun to school and accidentally shot himself has been charged.

Huntsville police Sgt. Tony McElyea said in a news release Tuesday that 41-year-old Letroy Cole Jr. was charged with receiving stolen property and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. McElyea says police obtained evidence that the firearm was originally possessed by the student's father.

The shooting happened Monday morning at Blossomwood Elementary School. Police say the student brought the gun to school and had been showing it off when it discharged, shooting him in the hand.

Police say the student's injuries were not life-threatening and there was no intent to harm anyone. It's unclear if Cole has a lawyer.

My first thought too, and generally true. In this case, the dad's gun was stolen and he is a felon Hoyt Sep 2018 #2

I am firmly in the camp that parents that keep their guns unsecured should go to jail. It just really pisses me off that this is almost never enforced for white parents, but only for this black one.

who is prohibited from owning guns.

But, if it had been a good ole white wing gun-fancier, police would likely would have never investigated the gun, just comforted the dad and talked gun crud with him about his closet full of other gunz.

Glad kid and classmates weren't hurt badly.
