Black Lives Matter holds rally Saturday for Amazon union vote

With the deadline for counting ballots a little more than two weeks away, union organizers gathered in Bessemer this afternoon for a Black Lives Matter caravan to show solidarity with workers at Amazon’s fulfillment center.

About 75 people came to the event, where cars lined up and drove past the center entrance, blowing horns and blaring music after speakers at an event tied the demands of workers to the social justice movement.

More than 5,000 ballots went out last month to workers at the fulfillment center, who will decide whether they will be represented by the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). The vote count takes place March 30.

Eric Hall, a Black Lives Matter organizer, said the union drive has gained worldwide attention.
