Dunleavy vetoes election overhaul bill, Senator says they will have the votes to override

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Gov. Mike Dunleavy, R-Alaska, vetoed a bill designed to overhaul Alaska elections, citing legal issues with the bill after it garnered bipartisan support.

If signed into law, the bill would implement a new ballot tracking system, provide paid postage for all absentee mail-in ballots and implement provisions for faster election results, among other changes.

“Alaskans deserve an elections system that is simple, consistent, and trustworthy,” Dunleavy said in a news release. “While I support improving safeguards this bill may present legal concerns as well.”

Those issues, the governor said in a letter to the senate president and house speaker, are the bill’s effective date and “signature verification.”
