Related: About this forumSaturday night update on the recent database issues -- we are cautiously optimistic
Hello everyone,
Since we re-opened DU for everyone earlier today, the database seems to be performing normally. We are continuing to monitor the situation, but we're cautiously optimistic that the issue has been resolved.
I'd like to apologize once again to all the people who got locked out over the last 48 hours. Our only option if we wanted to keep DU online was to massively reduce the amount of traffic and connections to the database, so we did what we had to do. The alternative would have been taking DU offline for everyone, but we wanted to try and keep it running for as many people as possible.
I can't promise that this is the last issue we'll see over the next few days. The week leading up to the general election is the busiest and most chaotic time in a four year cycle for us, and while we always do what we can to anticipate and mitigate any issues, sometimes things like this database glitch just strike without warning. I'm glad we were able to get things back up to speed in a relatively short amount of time, and we've got our fingers crossed that DU will be performing normally as we go forward.
Thanks again for your patience. Hopefully we will not have to make any further announcements about this.

(90,765 posts)I dont claim to speak for the rest of us here, but its a safe bet that LoveTheDU would very accurately describe how WE ALL feel about this place!
Hope you feel as at-home here as the rest of us do! (Or dare I adjust that to the rest of us DU!

(Of course, this does mean that if the site goes down again, it's Elad's fault

(23,708 posts)Elad and I have two different skill sets when it comes to DU -- he's the back end guy and I'm the front end guy. So if it's a problem involving, say, page elements being out of place or things not showing up on the screen correctly, that's for me to fix. If it's a database problem, that's Elad's thing. Often, these issues will overlap and we'll work out a solution in tandem, but this one was pretty much all Elad.

If I remember correctly, the site is much more protected from some psycho attack like the one that shut down the site in 2016, right?
I'm looking forward to a great news Tuesday on DU!

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
