Israeli forces fired stun grenades and assaulted mourners carrying the coffin of slain journalist Shireen Abu Akleh outside a Jerusalem hospital on Friday, ahead of her funeral service and burial in the Old City.
Palestinian mourners insisted on carrying Abu Aklehs coffin on their shoulders from the St Joseph French Hospital to the Roman Catholic church in the Old City, before taking her to her final place of rest, the Mount Zion cemetery.
Before they could leave the hospital premises, Israeli forces attacked them, pushing them back, storming the yard and making arrests.
An Al Jazeera livestream captured the moment mourners nearly dropped Abu Aklehs coffin as Israeli forces beat them.

As a Jew, news like this makes me cringe even more than otherwise. SOMETHING must be done to stop these excesses, as they clearly throw gasoline on the flames of burgeoning anti-semitism around the planet

Mister Ed
(6,704 posts)...is that they clearly throw gasoline on the flames of burgeoning anti-semitism around the planet.
Another reason to stop the excesses is that they're wrong, cruel, and inhuman.

(2,598 posts)When you take this kind of politically expansive position, trying to make an appeal to those who are less automatically horrified in the same way as you or I, there is the risk of at least implicitly understating that immediately overwhelming moral disgust in order to make a plea to anyone who might possibly be swayed
Israel is something of a democracy and yet keeps electing governments to power that seem utterly deaf to the immense moral concerns that this situation highlights so painfully

(27,144 posts)People of Jewish heredity have certainly been terrorized and brutalized throughout history with the Holocaust being the most horrendous acts against humanity. Even today the Jewish people are suffering anti-Semitic attacks against them like the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue last year and the hostage taking and shooting at a Jewish synagogue in Texas in January.
But how do these actions of Jewish officials in Israel help their situation. It made me angry reading the article. It made me think of how Putin and his henchmen are treating the Ukrainians, who themselves have gone through eras of ethnic attacks.
The shooting of the reporter was bad enough, but then to disrupt her funeral procession and arrest mourners is unconscionable. Had they allowed for a decent, respectful process, the Israeli government would have been lauded.
I was hoping with Netanyahu no longer Prime Minister, a new era of civility between Israel and the State of Palestine would begin and just perhaps a way forward to a peaceful coexistence. I know their differences run deep and changes won't happen overnight, but actions like this make it even more unlikely there will ever be peace.

Did you know that 19 Israelis have been murdered in the past month? No? Why not?

(12,744 posts)The attached story does not offer an explanation.
If there is not a reasonable explanation, this was fundamentally stupid.

The Israel security tried to stop it.

Do you blame China for the recent spate of Sinophobic attacks around the world, but especially in the US? Or do you correctly blame the perpetrators? So many whine anytime Israel is discussed, "but...but...but...you are conflating Jews with Israel." You are doing just that when you claim the actions of a foreign country are the reason for attacks against others outside said country because of ties to that country.
Anti-Semites are responsible for anti-Semitism, not Jews. As a Jew, I despise seeing people, including other Jews, blame Jews for anti-Semitism and providing an excuse for the actions of anti-Semites.
