Trump Used Phony Numbers To Justify His Massive Tariffs

Source: Mediaite.com

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs on all imports into the U.S. As a starting point, the administration is implementing a baseline tariff of 10% on all foreign goods. He also singled out dozens of countries for higher tariffs. For example, Vietnamese imports were hit with a 46% tariff while the European Union was slapped with a 20% one. Despite the Trump administration’s previous insistences to the contrary, tariffs are paid by businesses that import tariffed goods – not the exporting country. These costs tend to be passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices. This is why economists – and even pro-Trump Republicans – have said tariffs are effectively a tax.

Next to each country were two columns. The first was labeled “Tariffs Charged to the U.S.A.” But again, the U.S. does not pay tariffs on U.S. exports tariffed by other countries. The importing entities in those countries do. Moreover, the first column contains a qualifier stating that the “Tariffs Charged to the U.S.A.” account for “currency manipulation and trade barriers.” It is unclear how the Trump administration calculated the alleged manipulation and trade barriers when incorporating them into its already flawed description of “Tariffs Charged to the U.S.A” The second column is labeled “U.S.A. Discounted Reciprocal Tariffs,” which implies that Trump’s tariffs are merely a response to tariffs levied by other countries on U.S. goods and that Trump’s tariffs are “discounted,” as if their imposition were modest.

Looking at the alleged tariffs other countries are supposedly levying on U.S. goods, one might be struck by the exorbitant rates in some cases. For example, if China were really imposing a 67% tariff on U.S. goods or if Vietnam were implementing a 90% tariff on U.S. products, that’s something that likely would have been retaliated against a long time ago. But in fact, these numbers do not represent “tariffs.” Take the E.U. “tariff” on U.S. goods of 39%. In 2024, the U.S. exported $370.2 billion to the E.U., according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. Meanwhile, the U.S. imported $605.8 billion from the E.U. That means the U.S. ran a trade deficit with the E.U. of $235.6 billion.

What the Trump administration seems to have done is taken the deficit ($235.6 billion) and divided it by the total number of imports from the E.U. ($605.8 billion), yielding a figure of 38.89%, which the administration rounded up to 39% and called a “Tariff to the U.S.A.” imposed by the E.U. But obviously, that is not a tariff. Similarly, the U.S. ran a trade deficit with Norway of $2 billion in 2024 as the U.S. imported $6.6 billion in Norwegian goods. Hence, in the Trump administration’s calculation ($2 billion divided by $6.6 billion = 0.30), Norway has a 30% “tariff” on U.S. goods. Moreover, not even countries with which the U.S. has a trade surplus were spared. For example, in 2024, the U.S. had a trade surplus of $11.9 billion with the U.K., which Trump’s list claims had imposed a 10% “tariff” on U.S. goods. The same goes for Honduras, which ran a trade deficit with the U.S., which accused to Central American country of hitting American goods with a 10% “tariff.”

by definition can't be trusted. Actual tariffs are probably way lower. He needs to jack up the tariff numbers to justify the tax cuts.

website. Of course, it was last updated in 2024.

https://www.trade.gov/country-commercial-guides/vietnam-import-tariffs

In addition to significant drops in tariff rates when Vietnam first joined the WTO in January 2007, tariffs have decreased steadily over the ensuing years. Thus, most U.S. exports now face tariffs of 15% or less. However, in recent years, Vietnam has increased applied tariff rates on several products, and although the rates remain below its WTO bound levels, foreign businesses have been affected by the increases. Most of the products for which tariffs have increased are produced by Vietnamese companies.

You can look up any country there.

so that corporate media don't treat this tariff stupidity as some "news."
Or so that corporate media give a sliver of attention to the wreckage of scientific & economic expertise, hopefully causing the "privatization" of an oligarch controlled govt to feel birth pangs.

But I do go on. It's been a long day.

What's the end game of Trump destroying the economy and everything he and his amoral minions are doing to usurp the province of congress? As we knowTrump only works for himself. He cares little, or more likely nothing at all for most Anericans or any other people in the world.

Trump loves tariffs because they are direct money makers for the US Treasury.

He's on video saying exactly that and smiling. Repeatedly.

Think, when have you seen him smile?

What does it mean when a psychopath smiles?

His ultimate plan is to rob the the USA blind.

The padding of the US Treasury with money made from The People's money due to tariffs, the US as a crypto friendly country, the possibility of upgrading the gold standard are all parts of the singular plan to rob America.

We the People are already being robbed by the destruction of the government and the programs that we have paid for with our taxes.

The oligarchs are not going to be satisfied with only that.

They are not going to be satisfied with just their tax cuts.

The greedy are never satisfied, and psychopaths just don't care. They can't be made to care because they're psychopaths.

DOGE is a distraction from the planned heist via the tariffs plan.

It's possible Musk offered to find money for the robbery but, in actuality, as a psychopath himself, is probably trying to trick President Psychopath while plundering with the primary goal of helping himself, not Trump. Essentially, trying to bullsh¡t the bullsh¡tter.

The end goal for Trump has always been to pack the US Treasury's balance and steal The People's Money.

It's not simply about the tariffs.

They are just one means to an end.

Don't expect to hear about this from too many other sources. I learned about it by reading copious articles about tariffs and the economy. It is mentioned but not often. Of course, the so-called mainstream media, for the most part, is failing to point this out. They answer to the rich.

The microscopic examination of the minutiae is ludicrous.

Zoom out. It's the big picture that's important here, and it's even uglier from a distance.

Another article highlighted the likely objective … just straight-up extortion, like he’s doing in the open with law firms. Countries will need to pay him to get the tariffs reduced or removed. Him. Not the U.S.

Appreciate your comment on the media. Greed, fear of extortion if you disagree with the one who believes he's a Bronze God but is truly an Orange Devil, and his ill informed followers are really a huge problem for our democracy. The opposition to this attempted autocratic kleptocracy, better summarized as a kakistrocracy is on its way to calling out this administration.

Thu Apr 3, 2025, 01:10 PM

This is a very stupid way to calculate tariffs

Here is the Vietnam example

This guy cracked the tariff formula:
@orthonormalist

It’s simply the nation’s trade deficit with us divided by the nation’s exports to us.

Yes. Really.

Vietnam: Exports 136.6, Imports 13.1
Deficit = 123.5

123.5/136.6 = 90%
