Education Secretary Linda McMahon confuses AI with A1, sauce brand capitalizes on blunder

Secretary of Education Linda McMahon may have had a juicy steak in mind while speaking at a panel earlier this week because she confused artificial intelligence, also known as AI, with A1, the same name as the popular sauce brand.
McMahon, 76, made the mix-up on April 8 while speaking at the ASU+GSV Summit, an event focusing on educational innovation. The former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) initially referred to the acronym for artificial intelligence correctly, saying, "You know, AI development I mean, how can we educate at the speed of light if we don't have the best technology around to do that?"
Things got sticky as McMahon's speech continued: "A school system that's going to start making sure that first graders, or even pre-Ks, have A1 teaching in every year. That's a wonderful thing!" "Kids are sponges. They just absorb everything," she added. "It wasn't all that long ago that it was, 'We're going to have internet in our schools!' Now let's see A1 and how can that be helpful."
'Every school should have access to A.1.'
A.1. Sauce capitalized on McMahon's blunder by posting an Instagram post on their verified account saying, "You heard her. Every school should have access to A.1." "Agree, best to start them early," the picture attached to the post reads. Other Instagram users loved the response from the Kraft Heinz-owned brand. One user even commented, "I will be buying a bottle or two because of this post."

(13,642 posts)McMahon's contributions to education will dwarf those of Pestalozzi, Comenius, Froebel and Dewey. Linda's concepts will be studied by future educators, along with those of Professor G.W. Bush, who famously uttered these words of wisdom: "Rarely is the question asked: is our children learning?" and "You teach a child to read, and he or her will be able to pass a literacy test."

Correlation between political power and wealth? That's a different thing; and the perfect recipe for autocracy apparently.
I have trouble seeing a way out of this as long as the role of money and communications in politics are essentially deregulated.

(18,515 posts)How long has it been since kids in elementary schools have had/needed laptops, or at least computers in the classroom?
Yet we still off-shore and on-shore* the majority of good job in information technology. What happened? Well duh, USING computers was never the issue.
Just what the F*CK does any AI-humping moron think that AI is going to do for a FIRST GRADER?
I predict instead that it will HARM learning. (Which may be the actual goal, and most here will understand what I mean by that.)
* "on-shore" - in case anyone is not familiar - means hiring H-1Bs instead of American workers. Even for near-entry-level positions. And the C-suite insists it's because they can't find qualified Americans for these jobs. But, news flash from someone with decades in IT - it is NOT rocket science. At least not for someone entering IT at an entry-level position. Yet some (not all) of the on-shored people still manage to be bad at it. So why the f*ck can't we hire Americans and let them learn via OJT? (Answer: This is your country on oligarchy.)

(59,508 posts)Not of course. But that doesn't seem to matter to them as witnessed by McMahon being appointed Education Sec'y.
I contend however that poor education leads to fewer and fewer people in positions of power to actually make good decisions on...oh wait. I think we've already gotten there (see trump as president and his cabinet appointees)
From Steven Miller to Kash Patel to DOD Sec'y Hedseth to bribe taker Bondi as AG down to MaMahan, and here we are.
We're so screwed.

(52,108 posts)Not only do we face the issue that if Trump gets his way by shutting down the school lunch programs a lot of kids wont have anything to put A1 on, Im starting to think we need to remove computers from K-6 education and go back to books and pencils.
Last night I put together the Sunday paper. Because theres a delay between runs I was reading the Lifestyle section, which prints Thursday night and gets the inserts Friday morning, to kill time. The cover story was about a monastery, and the story jumped to the last page in the section where I found this jump head: MONESTERY. Uhh
dude, teach the Three Rs and when the kids can spell and find information without automation then introduce computers.

The above is like we are repeating history from 8 years ago. The little segment from the above video with the Chaffetz Town Hall, seems to presage what would eventually happen to him later, where he decided not to run again in 2018, and didn't even finish out his term, instead resigning halfway through 2017.

(232,097 posts)The department! And, along with the Department of Energy, the Department of Education was made a cabinet level position by President Carter in an effort to streamline the federal government. TFG apparently wants to eliminate education in this country just when it's needed the most - we need to educate the next generation, especially in history and Civics...
And I remember Chaffetz, he gave us a preview of what's happening now. And he was succeeded by Trey Gowdy who wasn't any better. Good Grief!
BumRushDaShow
(150,613 posts)there was still a lot of forms, letter heads, and other documents that referenced "HEW" (since it was broken up by Carter in '79).
They want to control ALL of the information and education and are going full force in a "now or never" endeavor.
It's right out of "1984" - "He who controls the past, controls the future"
That is why they are trying to erase and then completely re-write the past history of this country.
And Chaffetz was a nasty PITA like Issa & Nunes. Gowdy was too but seemed to have softened a tiny bit like Jeff Flake, when going out the door.
