Ossoff: Trump's recent actions 'should chill us to the bone'

Source: The Hill

Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.) said that President Trump’s recent executive actions “should chill us to the bone” and claimed that his “authoritarian impulses” are a danger to American democracy. “I think it’s clear. We have never seen a president try to wield the federal government to crush his critics and political adversaries. That’s something new in American history, and it is, in my view, un-American. And it’s something that should chill us to the bone, no matter our politics, no matter our policy preferences,” Ossoff said in an interview with The Associated Press (AP) that was published Saturday.

Ossoff, who is running for re-election in a battleground state that Trump won in the 2024 presidential election, said he reminds his Republican colleagues, conservative friends and supporters in Georgia that “one day again” a Democrat will occupy the Oval Office and the “shoe will be on the other foot.” “This is about checks and balances. This is about whether or not the executive branch is constrained as designed by our Constitution, by judicious legislators who can put their partisanship aside to protect the public interest,” the Georgia senator told AP.

The 38-year-old senator argued during the interview that the best approach Democrats can take now that they are the minority in both chambers of Congress is to work on informing constituents that the administration’s policies are not aligned with their interests.

“When I see the president trying to advance a legislative agenda, the substance of which is slashing the vital health care programs that fund Georgia hospitals — for example, in Georgia, the Medicaid program covers 40% of all kids, Medicaid covers 50% of all births, Medicaid covers 70% of all seniors in nursing homes,” Ossoff said on Saturday. “The president of the United States wants to gut the Medicaid program to pay for tax cuts for the wealthiest people in the country.

Please do something! This is about what the next outrageous step should be. What should the people who seethe at the term New Russia do? What action can we take and can you tell us if it is worth laying our lives down because I certainly don’t want hand wringing from Congress people to be the finale comments after the carnage! Honestly I don’t want my grand baby to lose his voice of reason grandma for no good reason! We need to know what we should do to save this country and the children who live in it! TIA!

He mentioned the problem during his town hall - https://www.democraticunderground.com/10143447853

(snip)

...an attendee who asked why Democrats have not moved to impeach Trump, stating her belief that “everything that Trump is doing is leading us down an authoritative rule.” “Do more. I like you and I will vote for you if you are brave, and you do what we need,” the attendee said. “We need him impeached, we need him removed.”

Ossoff in response said he “strongly” agreed with the attendee, but told the audience that the move is not currently feasible given the current makeup of the House of Representatives, which is responsible for introducing articles of impeachment. “The only way to achieve what you want to achieve is to have a majority United States House of Representatives,” Ossoff said. “And believe me, I’m working on it every single day, every single day.”

People need to understand that we are in the minority of both chambers of Congress. That was a result of the non-voters, the "protest" voters, and the "revenge" voters.

What they COULD do is more "obstruction" and some have started doing that. But I think they are still operating out of a past mindset that their constituents "want them to work across the aisle, etc. etc.", and that whole sentiment seems to have disintegrated now. There are a lot of "newer" (D) members of Congress there who came in during and after the 2018 tsunami, so they don't all know the tricks of the trade.

Personally as a former local election worker in a state that had its presidential election stolen I want to see safeguards implemented and the autopsy of 2024 publicized. I want to see that we are actually going to have a shot at votes counted. We are late to the game for this so IMO. When I hear people like Collins and Merkowski saying they are scared….it makes my blood boil. They do have the power to make good trouble with almost 50% of the people there available to do big things. They just need to understand that yes they and their families will be on the line exactly like every person out here is.Their situation is no different except that they have been paid for years to protect the Constitution and failed!Exactly like the American children that are being deported and raided daily. At a minimum we should be able to stop this blatant child trafficking….but then they didn’t stop DeVos the first time around. Sickening! Enough to make a human physically ill!

We aren't "late". As soon as Democrats took back over in 2020, the first 2 bills they introduced were these -

H.R.4 - John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2021

H.R.1 - For the People Act of 2021

They established the necessary "guardrails" and would have pieced the original Voting Rights Act of 1965, BACK together after John Roberts picked it apart. But because of the 60-vote threshold (filibuster) in the Senate, they couldn't get these enacted without a change in that filibuster Rule (Manchin & Sinema blocked any idea of a "carve-out" of the 60-vote threshold). Then in 2022, we lost the House, and that was the end of that.

Back in 2019, that dumbass Mick Mulvaney spouted - "Get over it... elections have consequences", and right now, we are experiencing the results.

The ones that need to see the light and thwart this, are the GOP and we need to get more people voting EVERY YEAR - including those off-year state/county/municipal elections. We still continue to see gobs of people not even bothering (and that's not including those who DO try and get blocked with draconian measures to keep them from voting).

Musk openly mocked manipulation of the 2024 election. Pretty sure his threats are promises but as always…time will tell!

Unfortunately states are actively legislating to clear voting rolls. It’s like trying to fill a sieve. It won’t stop us from trying though!

If 30% of the passengers on a sinking boat wait for the majority to make a plan everyone is probably gonna die. There are leaders everywhere! In this case They just need to know that the people will follow to save a nation.

But the point is that we need to get more people to VOTE and that means at the STATE level.

The reason why "states are actively legislating to clear voting rolls" was because at some point in the past, Democrats and Independents sat it out and didn't want to get involved "in politics". A lot of that is still true today.

Turnout matters. But it also means having Democrats RUNNING for those seats. So many state/county/local positions are going uncontested, where the GOP automatically get in.
