'Humanitarian city' would be concentration camp for Palestinians, says former Israeli PM
Source: Guardian
The humanitarian city Israels defence minister has proposed building on the ruins of Rafah would be a concentration camp, and forcing Palestinians inside would be ethnic cleansing, Israels former prime minister Ehud Olmert has told the Guardian.
Israel was already committing war crimes in Gaza and the West Bank, Olmert said, and construction of the camp would mark an escalation.
It is a concentration camp. I am sorry, he said, when asked about the plans laid out by Israel Katz last week. Once inside, Palestinians would not be allowed to leave, except to go to other countries, Katz said.

If they [Palestinians] will be deported into the new humanitarian city, then you can say that this is part of an ethnic cleansing. It hasnt yet happened, Olmert said. That would be the inevitable interpretation of any attempt to create a camp for hundreds of thousands of people, he said.

(3,242 posts)No brick-and-mortar homes, schools, universities, hospitals, mosques, no businesses, commerce, agriculture, fishing, no communities.
It's a concentration camp, not fit for sustained human life.
This is where genocide denial leads to and where it MUST now end.

(3,242 posts)We need many, many more voices, in Israel and the diaspora. Due to the cowardice and self-interest of our Western "leaders", it seems to me that only the Jewish people themselves can put a stop to this.

(3,242 posts)They terrorize not just the Palestinians but their own too. People literally are too scared to speak out. Olmert has a lot of courage, hope it's contagious.

(488 posts)Seeing what is happening every day in Gaza, how can the world continue to stand by and watch Israel take yet another step in its obvious campaign of ethnic cleansing and collective punishment? And western media should be giving more attention to Jews who do participate in Pro-Palestinian protests.

(3,242 posts)It's masks off for our Western, democratic "civilization". We talk a good talk, but...
Our rhetoric doesn't match our behaviours. It's noted by the people of the Global South, China etc. Next time we preach to them about "human rights" and "equality" blah blah they will remind us of our hypocrisy. We've lost whatever moral authority we still had.
The press should be giving more attention to Palestinian voices too. It owes it to them, the press carried the IDF and Israel's water, far beyond when they should have known better. Yes, opposing Jewish voices too, and of course would carry more weight.
